Filters and Filter Minders

FYI, I have had some problems with very high flow engines collapsing K&N filters. Not sure if anyone has had an unexpected surge, where the engine goes flat & boost falls off, but My Camaro was also doing this exact thing. The filter was the largest conical 4" inlet filter they made. It was sucking the pleats together choking off the air.

I then tried Green Filters http://www.greenfilterusa.com/ & they have worked well. The wire mesh they use is a heavier stainless steel, instead of the softer mesh that K&N uses. The filter is much stiffer. Just a thought if anyone is buying filters.

I've collapsed both the KNN and AFE PG7. Mind you, they were probablly dirtier than most of you ever let your filters get. Oil filters are not made for gravel roads.

True dat I used to work at a rock quarry. Those K&N's never stood a chance and the PG7 wasn't a whole lot better if you didn't clean it every other week. People would see the pile of them in the shop and just stand there going :WTF2:.:rofl:

Those surges scare the crap out of you too! Not quite as bad as having the blue boot before the turbo collapsing , but they are still bad. Every time it has happend to me I swore I blew something up AGAIN.
Kat, you should be able to tell almost right away if it collapsed or not, it will be disfigured.
Mick, those green filters look pretty! Do you run the dual cone or just the SS ones?

Yeah, I got 2 AFE's and one KNN sittin around gathering more dust. I always come across (trip over) my plastic KNN intake tube and think I should put it back on, then look at the filters and decide against it. I can go a helluva lot longer without sucking in my filterminder with a modded stock airbox and filter than I ever could with those.

Nope, pass two I removed the K&N entirely and ran open intake. It got WORSE!

My AFE PG7 actually triggers the filter minder, even when it's literally just been cleaned. I don't get it lol. I clean it, floor it (in park even!), go back and click the button again. Makes no sense to me lol.

According to AFE it has something to do with the way the minder is in the tube at the 90* angle where the stock one is just kind of around a corner and not directly in the air flow. I called them and talked to them about it a long time ago. They had me take the filter off and punch it sitting still and it still sucked it all the way to the red.

Larry, I did not consider my post off topic, as it directly related to the K&N link Pat posted in the original topic. I hate to see people buy a $60 filter that will not support the required power level.

Unfortunately K&N does not have a good published listing of air flow ratings for their filters so it is hard to buy the correct one based on their data, as size is not the only consideration.

Considering the trouble others have had as well, I would atleast like to warn others in the original post of the potential problem.

Thank Lonnie I was literaly about to order a 5" K&N filter for the new turbo, I guess I need to look in other areas

Filter minder? What the hell is that, mine went MIA when I put my AFE dry-s filter on my K&N intake.
For the guys running down gravel roads, my buddy had same problem, had him change to dry filter & put a pre filter sock on problem solved.

Lonnie, I don't think Larry meant you were OT, He moved some old posts from other threads in here to help this one out.

I have a K&N in the stock airbox still. No issues except it's dirty cuz I haven't cleaned it in about 15000km!! It is better than stock as it actually "locks" into place with a 1/8th turn and the stocker is at the mercy of your airbox lid holding it in place. It is a cone style but with a plastic cage around it at the cone end to support it.

Maybe I shouldn't have said off-topic, I meant to say I created a seperate thread for the filter posts, that way keeping the turbo duct posts together and the filter posts together.

Actually, I do realize this new thread is a good topic for a separate discussion & will probably be seen more since being separated from the old thread... I would just recommend looking into the "Green Filters" (or posting the recommendation) anywhere you see a K&N recommendation, unless you like buying $60 crushed filters. I use my big K&N filter as a holder for scrap dowel rods & tubing on the workbench.
