As i was rolling up to the fuel pump i ran out of diesel. the primer pump is junk on my 2004.5 lly so i used just a little spray of ether to maybe help fuel get back to engine. Then another small spray and then another and then it wanted to fire so what the f*** give another small spray or two. Then shit hit the fan and sure yall know whats next. black smoke came bellowing and ears ringing as it came to life i thought she was gonna blow just like my heart out of my chest. So now im sad and depressed and hate that i asked my wife to look in the back seat for a can of ether or mad that she found what i asked her to look for. Either way got fuel primed and now when i turn her over its like the batteries arent charged up she wants to start but im scared if it does start what may happen. it struggles to turn over fast. where should i start to resolve this? stuck valve, bent rod bullet to my head cause i freakin new better than to do what i did! if your gonna comment on how dumb i am please dont cause I KNOW but any advice will help. Im so grateful for GOOD advice from the guys that have gone before me. THANK YOU

Make sure your batteries are good. Can have them tested. But minimumly put them on a charger. Then do a compression test through the glow plug holes.

And as stated above, could have bent or sheared the crank and or cam pins. Would be good to inspect them before trying to crank it over too much more

Would be a good idea to pop the valve covers off and inspect the rockers and everything else in there

No one here is going to call you stupid unless you are being stupid here and fighting good helpful advice. If anyone does we will slap them hard and let them know that's not how we roll. Shit happens. Even the best of us do dumb stuff every so often. I just chock it up to a learning experience. Maybe not the smartest way to learn about that stuff but very effective.

PS: gasoline works much better than ether as a starting aid. A spoon full or two on the air filter works well to get the engine RPMs up during cranking. An error with using starting fluid is meny don't realize how long the air intake track is on these vehicles. It takes a lot of cranking to move the air from the filter into the engine. So, one can make the mistake of adding more and more as it isn't doing anything. Then when it goes it has so much that they can over speed. Very difficult to overdo ot with gasoline. I've literally fogged the intake on mine with gasoline and it just ran like a regular engine.

Thanks for that info i appreciate ya! my next question was gonna be "can i try and get it to fire up"? "would it do more damage if it did start"? Im thinking probably just start taking her apart and seeing what i can see is broken. The gasoline idea i like and will most definitely give it a shot next time around. I will never leave or have a can of ether in the back of my tuck! lol thanks for the advice much much appreciated!

The biggest problem with either on newer engine is glow plugs/gride heater lighting it off prematurely. If it's already operating temp generally neither will cycle for start up..
The next is too much then basically hydro-fireing it and bending stuff.

Make sure the batteries are charged. And starter is cooled off.

Should be able to pull the balancer and check alignment of the reluctor/oil pump wheel and see if it's still aligned with the dowel pins.. will need a mirror/bore scope to get in there with the cooling stack still in place

If crank sensor slipped you can break/bend stuff as it tells the ECM where TDC is at.

Spray silicone in aerosol also works well. It’s time to start digging into it and see what damage you have. You may have lifted the heads as well.

Didnt we used to recommend using WD40 as "starting fluid" way back when? I forget.
I've never been able to get WD-40 or spray silicone to work well. I think with the long intake and intercooler the spray just ends up coating everything and never makes it to the engine. Gasoline will evaporate into the air stream

I spray silicone in post intercooler.
