Hello all.... I have a 2001 HD and for some reason the emergency brake pedal does not seems to want to come all the way back up by itself, you can pull it all the way back up and it will stay. I have adjusted the brakes and replaced the leaking axle seals so that’s not the issue. If I pull on the cable under the truck the brake pedal will come back to the proper position...

It’s like the cable has stretched… I have search and only find brake pad adjustment procedures…

I will ask Robert (RKTMech) to look at this thread. He fixed Wendy for me.

Most e-brake cables have an adjustment somewhere, but having said that, I have never really looked for one on my truck.

The return for the e-brake pedal is built into the pedal assembly, if your e-brakes are adjusted properly and work the pedal travel shouldnt be to far. But weather it goes to the floor or only moves an inch it sounds like the pedal return spring in the assembly is broken, the only adjustment is at the shoes themselves. hope this helps.

I have had the e-brake assembly off and I am sure that the spring is not broken. I have also had both rear wheels off to adjust the parking brake and it still goes to the floor.....

I have a new set of parking brake shoes that I guess I will install, doesnt look like they are any thincker than the ones that are on there but its worth a try.

One more question, do you need to pull the axle to install the new pads? It looks like it would be a pain in the A** to get them off if you didnt.

Thanks

Well it sounds like you have two issues, one is the pedal return and the other is no e-brake operation!? Well you should have put the new shoes on when you had the hubs off the first time because the seals are one time use. Yes they are a pain to do with the hub in place but here we are. Ok I am still confident that your pedal return problem lies with the pedal assembly and as far as your e-brake performance....you should get the inner e-brake area of your rear rotors turned on a brake lathe and make sure the shoes are adjusted properly. Cables do stretch for awhile but if they have got to the point that the adjusters for the shoes are all the way out and still no e-brake then you might need to buy new or less used cables, Personally I have never seen these cables stretch that much. You can also look closely at the junction where the cables turn from one to two and see if the bracket has broken, cracked, or deformed.... Other than that we'll see what tomorrow holds, Good luck.
