I know this is not a suburu forum but I'm hoping someone has a idea. On my 97 legacy outback the engine fan wont turn on and the car over heats. Fan is good I hooked it to the battery it works. Changed the coolant temp sensor and thermostat checked fuses and nothing. Anyone have a clue? I really don't want to create a account on one of those forums so if anyone has a clue thanks.

Check you eath circiuts first
see if you can find a wiring diagram of the internet that shows conector views if possible and do continuity checks to elliminate that and that you may have to get some one to put a scan tool on it to chech computer funtion as it may be controlled by the ECM and a scan tool will tell you the condition of the circiut

I'll try to get a scan tool on it today. And as for the coolant switch the only one the dealer say that it has on the 2.5 L is the one I replaced under the intake manifold(what a pain in the ass). I haven't seen a fan relay would it be in the fuse box under the hood? All I see in there is ac relays?

Also I tested the leads on the harness here it clips into the plug on the fan and there is no hot wire with the car running and ac on.

There probably is (or should be) a relay for the fan. I would imagine it would be near the fuse box, but it might be worth tracing the harness from the fan and see where all it goes.

Yeah I have been trying but with working long hours. I was hoping there was a better solution than driving it into the ocean.

So I Checked all wires. Everything looked good and tested out. The fan runs through all the test when the key is in the on position but the car is not started. There is a slot for a second fan but didn't have one when I bought the car. Could the fan be in the wrong spot? When you start the car the fan won't even cycle.

So one last question on this issue. I want to wire a switch so I can flip a switch when I need the fan on then cutthe swith off. Has anyone done this? I tried to do it and literally melted the swith. What gauge wire should I use? What kind of switch should I use? Please help.
