well its about time for my yearly edge egt probe replacement for my insight monitor and once again im out of the warranty by 30 days. has anyone tried buying a regular non edge brand probe and trying to wire it in. i don't want a mechanical egt gauge because i like the way it shows on the edge and i like the alert. willing to try anything at this point though

I'd think you would be able to Sean. It's just a thermocouple isn't it? Surely you could make something from a furnace or water heater...not sure though

Technically any would work then wouldn't they?

I might try one too. It will probably last longer than the edge ones.

It gets its reading off ohms correct? and then does magical stuff and makes the egt needle move...if that's the case I'd think you'd need a properly sized thermocouple but not sure...Ben would be the guy for that question

Thermocouples create voltage. If it's truly a thermocouple, you need to figure out what type as they use different material.

Could also be an RTD, which read resistance.

i was just thinking a non edge brand egt probe wired into the top half of the edge brand probe wiring so it still plugs into the back of the monitor. no idea if the resistances will be off and give me false readings though

Just get a good Autometer or Isspro EGT, either one will give you years of reliable service and you won't have to wonder if the reading is correct or not.

My edge probes are steady failing also. Reason I haven't switched to something else is i like the fast reaction time of the edge probes, almost instant. Maybe someone knows of a brand of probe thats quick responding?

Might work. More than likely to throw off readings but not by much, just solder the connections. Cut a bad lead open to see what color wires, it's not a definite answer but most manufacturers try to keep certain types color coded.

Reads as though we may have limited life on probes per the link Noreaster posted....
Installation Information Exhaust Gas Temperature (EGT) Probe placement in the exhaust path requires special attention. If it is closer than 1½ inches to the cylinder head, probe life will be limited, too far away the probe will be less responsive.

Do you want to put it that close?

Outside reducing sensor life I was always under the impression that you want to get it further down the collection pipe for a more...'blended' EGT temp rather than it being so close to a specific cylinder.

That said in that pic is that a factory port?

It's easier to drill & tap the manifold than to drill a hole & weld a bung in the up pipe for the average person
There isn't a factory port on the older trucks

I drilled and tapped a hole in my up pipe and ran that for a year or two before I switched to manifold.. Worked fine but yeah I wouldn't recommend doing it that way lol.

IDK I've only glanced at a couple lmls & hard to see much with all that shit stuffed under the hood
When I have a spare moment I will have a look around and see what I can find.

I will snap a pic or two of my findings and post them up and let you guys know.

If you drill where the picture shows, that will give a decent cumulative reading for that bank. I wouldn't bother with the up-pipe.
