LLY: ECT maxed out on WOT run

Just took my truck out to do some datalogging, got a good WOT run in and over the course of probably 20 seconds my ECT shot up from 200 to 260. I didn't hear the dinger thing until I slowed back down, but it wasn't over 1/2 mile or so. Got it back in the driveway and had coolant all down the passenger side of the truck from the pressure relief hose. Popped the cap and waited for the pressure to relieve itself (a bunch more coolant that looked like black tinted water, very little orange came out). Engine seemed to be running ok, didn't sound weird or anything.

Did I lose a head gasket again? Or stuck t-stat? Any other ideas?

I think the ECT reading maxed out due to the ECT probe seeing a steam pocket or combustion gases, really don't think the engine actually overheated. Temps continued to increase like crazy even after I let off the throttle and coasted for awhile.

After sitting for about 15 mins I started it up to pull into the garage. Gauge was reading normal and engine is running fine. Just need to figure out what happened.

What's your water coolant %? Maybe less water? How old is the coolant.

Water pump was new about 2 months ago. Bosch unit. Could be bad. I'm due for an oil change anyway, will drain tomorrow. Coolant tank is empty now after opening the cap and letting the pressure release, will check tomorrow and take a pic. Might drain the rest into a white bucket to see what it looks like.

I was going to say you spun the pump but why all the excess pressure then?

Hope you don't drain coffee!

you lost the gasket they won't make it over heat just putting around but it will keep building pressure and getting hot when you get on it seen it time after time

Pretty sure there was a thread awhile back talking about doing new water pumps then gaskets letting go seemed to be really common and it's happened to me twice mainly on 01-05 stuff

Cool, I think I'm going to pull the motor this time so I'll probably take you up on that. I have a hoist but no stand.

Let me know when you want to tackle that thing, we are home the next 2 weekends.

Yeah, headgaskets. Im a bit surprised being you just did them.

Wait a second...didnt you live in Colorado? When did you move to Arizona?

I am surprised too. I want to be sure that I find whatever caused them to fail, would really like to not do them a 3rd time :thumb:

I was in Colorado, moved back to AZ in May. I'm a Phoenix native, spent 2 years in CO for work, then arranged a transfer with the same company to their corp HQ here in Phoenix. Good to be home :)

38 psi. I have not logged drive pressure, probably will get something set up to do so when the motor goes back together though.
