I went to do a full ECM reflash with a new DSP5 tune and it got into a "retrying previous block" loop. I let it go for a dozen rounds then hit Stop.

I tried flashing again and it didn't find the ECM so I keyed off and on. It sees the ECM now but;

Status Unknown
PCM not detected
ECM may not be secured
Initializing ECM Steps 1-4
No Response from ECM, Retry 2

then Error Message;

Bootloader Rejected reason: No response from ECM

I tried unhooking the batteries for 15 mins but same thing.

Thought I'd be latheing off the dually's tonight not this :rofl:

Assuming you tried to reboot laptop, I get weird messages like sometimes.

Usually disconnect everything, reboot fully, then plug V2 into laptop and once it recognizes it, plug it into truck.

Hasn't failed me yet.

I've tried rebooting, battery disconnects, different tunes/OS. Now updated software and it's not compatible with the firmware so a step backwards :woott: And I'm out of beer :spit: Router sh!t the bed so I've tethered my smartphone for internet and wifi from neighbors for downloads.

One of THOSE days :roflmao:

I went back to my old V7.5 Tune software and got the Flashscan going.

Initializing ECM 1 - 4
No Response from ECM
ECM is in an unknown state
disconnecting
CAN-VPW Bridge deactivated
Disconnected
Data transfer was interrupted
Done!

Any ideas on things to try? I'm going to keep trying software and firmware updates on this ECM.

I have a spare but don't feel like locking it too without knowing what went wrong.

Bright side; peddled over an got a six-pack :thumb:

Make sure you are running the July 3 release from our website, or the August 19 pre-release from here http://forum.efilive.com/showthread.php?17096-Release-Candidate-2-Aug-19-2011.

You need to make sure that for whichever version you are running, that you update V7, V8 and firmware/bootblock (dependent on what version you are updating from). As you've already found out, firmware/software mismatches can cause problems.

Once you are up to date, my suggestion is ditch your DSP tune, and try and flash in your stock tune.

If you have no luck, can you please cut and paste the full transcript of the fail?

It may also pay to check the VIN number with either the Scan Tool or Tune tool. If it looks like a bunch of junk, your ECM may be toast.

Cheers
Cindy

(I have a thread going on EFI Live forum too)

I updated to the new software for V7.5 and V8.

My first goal is to get the Firmware updated, any tips? Do I do 2 updates (firmware and bootblock)? Bootlock box checked or unchecked?

Thanks :hug:

How are you trying to update your firmware and bootblock?

I don't have my laptop in front of me with EFILive on it, so I'm trying to go off memory here. The way I like to do it is plug in the V2, open EFILive Explorer, you should see a little V2 icon pop up in the task bar next to the clock, click on that to open the update software (can't remember what it's called). It should open with the firmware/bootblock update information, but if it doesn't, there should be a tab on the left side of the window you can click on. Once you're there it will tell you if your bootblock or firmware need to be updated, if it does, there will be a button to click that will update it to the correct version of either one. Quick and simple.

I'm headed home to try it now and I was at the steps you describe but get different Error messages depending on which file I try to update with. The ECM still returns model and serial number so I'm hopeful.

I updated software to V7.5.7 (Build 170) and V8.2.1 (Build 160). The Flashscan updated to Bootblock V2.07.02 Apr 03, 2011 (Bootblock ok) and Firmware V2.07.14 Jul 03, 2011 (Firmware ok).

I tried downloading the stock tune using V8 and got Error E54 Controllers Not Supported (twice)

Using V7.5 I got Error Connection to the ECM has been lost check the cables...

I swapped in another ECM from the same year (assumed good, the motor I got with it ran great on my original ECM)

I tried Reading the ECM without Alt Keys then with Alt Keys (no key entered in the block);
Error Bootloader rejected Reason; Controller has returned to normal operation, please retry the operation

I tried again but it responds the same way.

See attached transcript.

Please download the pre-release version which has been pretty comprehensively tested. It is available from our forum thread HERE.

You need to download both the V7 and V8 versions and update your FlashScan V2 bootblock/firmware with the versions included in the V8 install.

Here are a couple of knowledgebase articles relating to software and firmware updates for future reference:
- Software updates (get from forum thread this time though).
- Firmware updates

If you still have issues please see THIS knowledgebase article and email me ([email protected]) with the trace information (just the file for the failed flash). Please try both V7 and V8 flashes.

Unfortunately if there is an error it is probable that your ECM has failed as Cindy mentioned.

Cheers,

I'll swap back to my original ECM, update both software to pre-release versions, update the firmware, pull the radio and On-Star fuses, and try again this evening...

If I have no luck with that, the second ECM will probably go back in. Are there any procedures for replacing the ECM? Can I program it with my VIN and use my original license?

The licensing is actually based on the unique serial number of the ECM controller. So the second ECM if used will need to have a VIN license allocated from your FlashScan device.

That bites, I justified the $1000 because I could tune 2 vehicles not 1 vehicle twice.

I have no option but to swap my original ECM out again and go with my back-up which I'm doing now. What is the procedure for commissioning the new ECM please?

This won't be short but hopefully thorough enough to get answers;

I updated to V7.5.7 Build 178 and V8.2.1 Build 168 and updated Flashscan from V8.2.1 (Bootblocker 1st then Firmware) Both ok and green text.

I installed my original ECM and then charged the batteries for an hour.

Using V8 I tried a full flash; Error E54 not supported

Using V8 I tried a Cal flash; No Data Recieved

Using V7.5 I tried a ? flash; Error Connection to ECM has been lost

(see transcript first)

I proceeded to try various procedures of reboot, key on, key on start program Alt Keys, high speed, etc no luck

I went back to V8 and tried combinations of Alt keys, assume key lock faulty, Cal flash, full flash etc

(couldn't save the transcript for this for some reason)

I installed my used ECM from an 03 which came with a motor I ran for two years.

Using V7.5 I tried to Read Cal Error; Bootloader Rejected reason; EFI Live could not read ECM etc etc.

(see Transcript 3rd)

Using V7.5 I tried to Read Cal using Alt Keys Error; Bootloader Rejected reason; Controller has returned to normal operation

(see Transcipt 4th)

Using V8 I tried Read Controllers Flash Memory; it detected E54 but Error; Controller is locked with a custom key

I would appreciate continued support from EFI Live on this thread to resolve this issue in order to lathe some rubber off ASAP. Thanks :hug:

I sent the trace/debug files to [email protected] for Flashing the Original ECM with V7 and V8 and trying to Read the spare ECM with V7 and V8.

I did not license the spare ECM yet and shouldn't need to Read it correct?

What time frame should I expect to hear back?

Thanks, Rod

Received a few emails just now and will forward to development. It is Saturday morning here so you may not hear back till next week (Sunday your time).

Reading an ECM doesn't require license allocation.

Things I'd like to try in the interim, please advise;

Could it be the Truck Body Controller complaining that the stock stereo is gone? Possible solution - pull TCM fuse(s)?

It is likely that I had an inactive ABS code set before flashing, possible cause?

I have a mostly complete harness that came with my spare motor and ECM. (The TCM connector is cut off). Could I energize the harness and ECM (missing FICM and TCM), wire in a OBDII connector and try flashing or will there be too much stuff missing?

I'm looking at them now, hopefully I'll have something for you to try soon.

The original PCM is dead. The second PCM appears to have a faulty lock. Is it possible the second PCM was tuned by another software package or another tuner that may have altered the lock - i.e. that may have locked the PCM?
Meanwhile, I'm trying to figure out some options to try to get past the lock.

We'll send you a replacement VIN license to cover the license for the original PCM. Please send your FlashScan serial and auth code as per the instructions on this page http://support.efilive.com/kb_article.php?ref=2143-YUOG-8049 to me ([email protected])
