Some cool stuff being dropped at CES this year!

Oh yes, that up there is Samsung's new 13.3-inch 9 Series laptop, and yes, it's said to be the "thinnest and lightest 13-inch notebook available." Revealed ahead of Samsung's CES presser, the duralumin machine weighs just 2.89 pounds and measures .68 inches thick -- in comparison, the 13-inch MacBook Air measures 0.11 to 0.68 inches thick and weighs 2.9 pounds. Those specs seem pretty darn comparable to us, but there's no denying this thing is rail thing, so we guess we can let Samsung slide with its lofty marketing claims. Unlike the others that have attempted to craft incredibly thin Windows laptops (see: Adamo XPS), Samsung has managed to cram this thing with power, ports, and features. There's no optical drive, but it has Ethernet, HDMI, and USB sockets and a headphone jack. Perhaps even more impressive is what's Inside -- it's got a brand new Core i5 2537M processor, 128GB SSD, and 4GB of RAM. Not enough for you? Its backlit keyboard, 400 nit LED-backlit display, and two 1.5-watt speakers and a sub-woofer should seal the deal. So, how much for that beauty? Samsung says it should be around $1,600, though it isn't providing a release date right now. We are bursting at the seams to get our hands all over that daring black chassis -- stay tuned for some hands-on impressions.

What I want WHICH should be STANDARD IMO is a back-lit keypad. There is MANY times when I'm sitting with my lap top in a dimly lit room say watching TV and you can't see the dam keypad for shit.

Perhaps I'm behind in times but that's the first back-lit keypad I've seen.

Not bad, but I'll keep my 13" Air ;)

Has twice as big of a solid state drive compared to that Samsung

Couple questions about that Samsung?

- Battery life (my 13" Air with the highest specs offered lasts 6 hours

- Video card?

Competition is good though.. I run a lot of apple stuff and like it overall but anything that may help bring their insane prices down is a good thing

see post #2 lol. Actually, its vidcard is lacking and is integrated :( but I dont game on my laptop, nor store insane amounts of data on a laptop. lol

Also the macbook air isn't backlit is it?

Im partial to anything non apple. IF its apple product I already start it off with -10 point then compare, then in the end I see how cost compares, apple looses almost every single time

If I was going to be going a lot of video editing I might consider a mac. But I dont. It reminds me of a hippy laptop, like the prius of the auto industry.

I picked up a disgustlingly heavy and large Dell XPS recently and it has a backlit keyboard. I will never own another computer without it!!

I have a MacBookPro (13"?) that I travel with, and it's fast enough to play games on, and when websurfing, or running normal office software, the battery life is over 8 hours in the real world. It's pretty well thought out.

That being said, these new Intel "Sandy Bridge" chip notebooks are going to be animals. That "turbo speed" applies to all cores until it hits it's thermal limit. They use less power, and process video right in the CPU as fast as a gaming card does.

If I were in the market for a new notebook, I'd get a Sandy Bridge i7 unit. They should hit the shelf before the end of the month.

2011 is going have a big jump in notebook speed.

Does that samsung have a HDMI output?

I use a regular macbook and the only complaint I have is that it uses a mini-DVI. The macbook air uses a micro-DVI.

After owning a mac for the past few years I dont think I will be back behind a PC in the forseable future.
