Tune helps, fuel quality and ambient temps makes a bigger difference than in our diesels I swear. Check normal crapp like air filter but welcome to the world of a stock 5.3...

1) Congrats on the new truck. :)
2) Yup, time to tune it.
3) downsize your pics before trying to upload, or use tapatalk or 3rd party and link to it.

Thanks. The more I drive it, the more we really like it.

Yeah, I was wondering if it was maybe just “no torque” even compared to my F150 ecoboost which isn’t diesel torque but more than most NA gassers. This is more than that though, I feel. It’s a throttle response thing for sure.

Does that year 5.3 have DOD and AFM?
what do those acronyms mean?  :baby: It has the deal where it shuts down 4 cylinders while cruising.

And after driving more tonight, the gap protective thingy engages even when not using the cruise control. I approached a stopped vehicle at a red light faster than the suburban was comfortable with and about made me eat the steering wheel and the seat was vibrating like a damn earthquake. I’ve got to find a way to shut that bullshit off ASAP. I’m not a complete asshole driver but I guess in the eyes of the suburban I’m way too aggressive. And it can kiss my ass. :spit:  :roflmao:

DOD -- Displacement on demand (drops 4 cyl when cruising)
AFM -- Active Fuel Management

IIRC, parts and tuning can be had to eliminate both, if you wanted to later.....

Thanks NC. :)

If its anything like my dads 18 Silverado there’s an adjustment on the steering wheel driver side by the cruise control buttons I believe.

Yeah, it adjusts the sensitivity of the gap protection but doesn’t allow to turn it off... at least not that I can tell yet. I was gonna dig through the settings and see if there’s a place to turn it off in there but just haven’t yet.

Do these years of 5.3s develop the excessive oil consumption like the 2008ish ones? I researched those 6 months ago but now I can’t remember if it’s related to the DOD system or something else? Part of me wants to say it’s actually something else? It was on CompD, a GM Master Tech was in the discussion. I’ll see if I can find that thread again...

If you want it tuned my buddy does great work. Hes in ohio though. Id def do a dod delete and tuning. It made a huge difference on my exs 4.8l. It was around 25hp and 70 ft lbs and a few mpg better average. Hartsel performance and tuning. 567-207-4159. Wouldn't hurt to give him a call and chat with him. My mom has an 18 yukon Denali and I personally hate driving it because of the vibrating seat haha.

I'll keep that in mind. It'd be awful handy if a tuner (one of you smart friendly folks just being generous or if I paid someone) would email me tunes since I still have a V2 I've never used. But IDK how the gasser folks normally do things - does it have to be tuned in person or do they email em?

Wait... does EFI Live work on these?

You can do tunes by mail on a gas rig. Grab the latest EFILive software, update your V2 firmware, and pull the stock tune off and post it here (well, maybe make a new thread). You don't need a VIN license to read out a tune.

Gas motors are actually quite a bit easier to tune than the diesels, IMO. Take some logs, and add some timing if you're not fighting KR already. Adjust PE lambda, turn off abuse mode, remap throttle curve to preference, and that's about all you can do on a N/A motor. If it had a turbo, things get more interesting. I'm not sure if you can patch lean cruise in to a DI motor like yours, but that was good for some MPG on the 2001-2006 motors.

Honestly, you can probably figure most of it out yourself with a little reading. I'd be happy to look over the stock tune + a log, then provide some suggestions on what to change. I'm no wizard, but I've tuned my fair share of older (2001-2008) LS motors, usually in swaps with strange intakes and exhausts. There's not a ton of power or mileage left on the table with these motors from the factory, so don't expect miracles. At least not from me, remotely, for free :spit:
