EFILive Duramax racers watchout for the Cummins - 5300 RPM

There has always been a rivalry between Duramax racers and Cummins racers.

You Duramax guys have always claimed you had the upper hand and that the RPM limiter on the Cummins was/is their downfall.....well sorry guys, not any more.

Below is what we've posted on the Cummins boards today. But no need to get disgruntled or upset - at the end of the day it's these advances that drive competition both the track and generate the aftermarket development. This year's racing season is sure to be unlike those of the past.

It's finally happened, after years of Cummins owners being told it can't be done, the RPM limitation on the 5.9L Cummins ECM has been beaten. We did say EFILive would change Cummins tuning forever, well, here's more proof.

Firstly, EFILive wishes to thank Brayden from Fleece Performance for he's persistence in working with us on beating this problem. When we first hinted at doing Cummins tuning Brayden said to me that he will do anything to help us figure out how to beat the RPM limiter. As he had a test truck with all the right parts as a mule there was nothing stopping us when the time came to give it a go.
With the time zone differences between Australia and Indiana, Brayden often found himself at he's workshop at 1am, 2am, testing changes we'd make over here during our working hours. Well finally we did it, and at some insane hour of the morning in Indiana you may have heard their shop truck screaming to 5,300 RPM.

It's not a 100% perfect run, the injection is maintaining over 100mm3 of fuel up to about 4,200 RPM, but starts to taper off above that, still, this is a minor set back we will keep pursuing and it may be something as simple as another table that was never calibrated from factory to fuel that high.

This RPM Limiter fix will not be available in our first public release, but it will at some point be available for everyone.

Below is a screen shot of the scantool from this run.

Cheers
Cindy

I will admit that the cummins is a constant reminder of advancing the technology of the duramax. Just like you said Cindy, it is truly the only consistent competitor. Even though I am not a tuner, our tuners will need to step up even more now with the advances in the Cummins world with EFILive. It DOES drive competition forward, and hopefully there will be more than just myself telling you all at EFI, GOOD JOB.

Sweet, congrats! As much as I love the Duramax, I feel that breakthroughs for ANY diesel are a good thing, keeps everyone on their toes. Might have to start playing with our 2006 Cummins here soon :thumb:

Off topic Wade. Do the math and check for overlap first. EFILive can't fix overlap issues, that's electrical, not digital. I'm not sure there is a limit at 5500 in EFILive, but since the highest peak HP I'm using is 4800, shifting at 5200, I personally haven't tried up there.

Anyhow, congrats Brayden! :thumb:

I think it's pretty cool they are giving props to those who give up their personal life to help with their tools.

If we want great tools to race our trucks, we need to keep the crew at EFILive well-fed and motivated. Wish I could still help, but I just can't afford another truck right now, nor the time and money it takes to push.

What you think we've been holding back? Lol

I don't think anybody has been holding anything back ... You misquoted me. I said, "step up even more" and that was a slam to any tuner. We have had a hand up on tuning since EFI came out. Would anyone disagree? Now with the knowledge of tuning and then hand the game over to Cummins? Kudos!

Pat the overlap is right on, the camshaft i have in here is good for 6300-6500 rpm, because that was our initial goal, the power does not evn start untill about 4500 rpm, below that it's gutless.

When i reach 5200 the defuel begins rail psi shoots up and the boost drops, egts normally drop too like a rock,( because the computor is pulling duration to limit RPM) i have turned as high as 57-5800 but when it reaches that high it nearly shuts the engine down compeatly, i mean like hitting the parachutes!!!

i am 100% sure it's software related,not mechanical.

I think Pat was talking about injector overlap. I don't think the ECM can fire two injectors at the same time.

I aint overly happy aboutt the cummins work......there is still work on the lb7 that can be one «««««««imho
Look at it this way, Simon. If they don't develop support for more products, they can't make more money. The revenue from selling EFILive for the Cummins will allow them to continue to operate and develop the software further everyone. They don't make any money off of updates to the software for vehicles they already support.
