I'm half filling the block and won't be running a oil cooler

Do I really need t- stats? For strictly 1/4 mile??

I'm planning on moving the rad to the rear and using a 1" return that would act as a resticion

What r your thoughts?

You should be fine. I don't run an oil cooler or thermostats. I do however have electric fans, so I can cycle them to control temperature while I'm waiting to pull.

No oil cooler, single electric fan (on a temp switch/controller), and electric water pump but I am keeping the quicker opening T-Stats (might as well use them).

I am also running a much smaller aluminum radiator (drag truck only).

You kinda need thermostats IMO. The engine will never get up to temperature, or it will overheat.

It could never get up to temperature because it wont stop cooling flow to let the engine warm up.

OR

It will overheat because the coolant is circulating so fast it never has a chance to "slow down" when it goes through the radiator and allow heat transfer to take place.

Personally I would never run without thermostats...

If you are literally trailering the truck to the starting line and then trailering it home, you might be ok

As long as the waterflow is going in the right direction, and you make pressure in the system, I'd think you'd be OK.

Pressure is good because it shrinks air bubbles increases boiling point.

I debated this a lot, and ended up using faster thermostats.

We tried this stuff in the race car back in the day. I run them as Ben said temps are up or down you have to have a stop and start to get heat and loose heat in the cooling system.

Especially if you have a large single (with no nitrous assist), it can be difficult to get the charger lit if the water is cold.

We ran a huge water tank of 80F water in Casper for LSR, and it took nearly 1/2 a mile for the engine to wake up. And that is with thermostats.

I agree with Ben, and the others when they say run them, or the engine will never get up to temp. If you decide to run a tiny little radiator to combat this, be sure you have some kind of restriction on the outlet of the engine or you will have a lack of heat transfer to the coolant causing overheating of the engine, and it may not even register cause the coolant will not ever get hot. Let us know whichever way you go, custom stuff is always cool to see! :thumb:

I'll run them for now..... But I know it will warm up with out the stats.

Running a 1" return will do 2 things create more pressure on the system and slow down flow rate..... is it enough I don't know? But it won't be hard to find out:)

Obviously I'm running a electric fan and pump

We don't run any on our race cars. We have expansion tanks on them and have never had a problem getting heat in the motor or with them running hot.
