Is there any reason why I couldn't cut an inch or so off the end that goes into the tranny to make removing it easier. I had to pull the transfer case and lower the trans in order to get it out so I could pull the downpipe out.

I've never had to do that to get it out... But I'm not sure if cutting it's ok

I think what you need to watch out for the the window at the bottom of the tube. That was put there for better breathing as all transmissions breathe better from two sources. You will be ok.

My trick for getting it in and out was to take of the inspection cover from the bellhousing and put it over the outside edge of the rubber grommet. Then slide the tube up onto the cover and slide it over the hole and when it's close, remove the cover and it falls into place without cutting the grommet.

Tough to explain but it worked awesome for me after fighting with it for 10mins. The metal cover works good as a bit of a lever as well.
