Hey guys,
I know this may be a bit out of the question but I have an 89 S-10 that is tired and is need of a repower. I really have been wanting to do a Duramax/Ally combo in this badboy and make it a comp only drag truck. Just wanted to get everyone’s thoughts. This isn’t something that’s going to happen tomorrow or next week just something I’ve been thinking about for a long time and wanted to get everyone’s input and also if there was any other motor that may better fit the bill and accomplish my desired endstate.

it would be a tight fit in an 89 , and would most certainly require a new tunnel made in the cab to clear the Alli , but nothing is impossible and if it worked that thing would be fning fast :D

You may wanna talk the guy that has done it in his s-10 over on DP tony. he jsut put a LBZ or LLY in a s-10 under the frankenstein section. definitly will require a good amount of trans tunnel work though

No biggie on trans tunnel work I plan on doing this when I have ready access to a welder/cutting tools and when I have those tools I can slap some metal together if i do say so myself. I am mainly looking at weight aspect on the front end/overall frame strength. I posted in his thread but he does mud boggers with SFAs but maybe he'll provide some info :D

That's what I'm thinking...stock bottom end for as long as it holds out and a dew upgrades here and there and it should run great

forget the allison use a th400 or 4l80
not saying the alli wouldnt be cool ... but 80 or 400 is shorter and easier to package

and your talking something would barely grose 4000lb when done

Wow...and I actually can work on TH400s. Never been into a 4l80 but hey it's worth a shot an they're more price effective than an ally

That trans was not even a full build. Just a Trans go and a Manual valve body with trans brake. All stock late model guts.

It now has billet goodies in it.

Never had any issues with OD even when shifting the Gear Vendor on with the TCC locked up.

A TH400 would work but no overdrive and no lockup means you would need a lot of tire.

The only bummer to the 4l80 IMHO is when you get up in the power like the Mustang first gear is to much. I have to pull power out to first gear to get it to stick to the track.

The full awesome would be a two speed turbo glide with a 1.78 low, TCC lockup, and trans brake.

Got the truck.
Want to go LLY+ motor so injector swaps are easier
Need to price trans
Get a CAD program and start working:happy2:

Yep, if a big block will fit, so will a dmax. I'd def. go 4l80/85 if I were you!

Back half it and go bust out some fast times with a stock bottom end dmax!

That's true...I'll have to look up the BBC builds as those would hold some promise for design ideas as I'm not the first person to think of it or do it. Again it's a pipe dream at the moment but maybe someday it'll come to fruition just going to be an expensive long process...oh well with sponsorship deals being a dismal outlook I'll just do it myself and be damn proud if I ever get it done :D

The only issue we have ever had in S10 swaps was the frame. If it came out with a 4.3 v6 the frame opens up wider past the cab then the earlier 2.8/3.4 version and the exhaust was a bitch on those but the 4.3 version was cake. Also if you look into the Bravada, Typhoon, cyclone setups they had some posi all wheel drives variations for the running gear. An all wheel drive Dmax s10 would be badass!

Thanks Larry I'll have to look into it. What have you guys done about frame reinforcement? It doesn't look like the mini truck frame would hold up to the tq of a dmax very well.

As long as we could retain the cross members on the frame we never had any issues. You could easily box it in from front to just behind the cab. They have pretty stout frames to start with anyways. You could also rob a hydroboost system off and astro van I believe and make it work. The only downside could be the 4wheel abs system most of them had, if yours is only 2 wheel then your fine, if its 4 wheel its going to be in your way-big ass box on drivers fender looks like a plumbers nightmare-they worked great but @ a cost of $1200-$1500 to replace it its not worth jacking with.
