Dex what?

I drained my cooling system and ran water with Redline water wetter to help keep the truck cool during a long pull with electric fans. Now I'm moving back to Colorado and need antifreeze again. Should I run the DexCool stuff that GM recomends or something different? Seems I've read more than once, some people don't like Dex for some reason. Also, true false: The cooling system holds 8 gallons. I will drain the cooling system and then dump in 4 gallons of coolant then top with distilled water from wally world at ninety four cents each.

I just drained my coolant and refilled it a month ago but be damned if I can remember. 8 US Gal sounds pretty close though. I use the dexcool GM compatible longlife stuff that they sell at Canadian Tire! I think as long as it says it's good for GM diesel engines, you should be OK.

24 qts IIRC. Going from a bad memory. Get it all out if you are going to use dex. I drained one that had precipitated with WW.

I just tore my motor apart, never had overheating issues. The inside of every passage was PERFECT. IMHO i will use the stuff that came from the factory provided no sanctioning body has issue.

WW is made for diesels. Why would I need to get it all out? I plan on putting it back in. I need to drain enough to allow me to put about four gallons of Dex in since it just water and WW right now. Its not that I want to get the WW out, just need to know how much Dex to buy and how much water to drain to fit said amount of Dex back in. Guess I'll be going with Dex since I haven't seen anything wrong according to other's posts (thanks). If you have doubts about WW, let me know why I should rethink adding it back in please.

Do not mix anything with Dexcool. Accept mineral free water.

Dexcool already has a surface tension agent in it. WW is not helping you if you are trying to formulate your own compounds

X2 - Dexcool does ugly stuff when mixed with anything. ask any GM tech about intake manifold issues on the gassers when you mix it with regular antifreeze.

we replace water pumps/thermostats/intake manifold gaskets EVERYDAY on our chevy gasser trucks from 1990-2006...I work for the columbus airport authority and we have about 35, 2500 series gass trucks....they do not like green stuff mixed with the pink stuff

That might explain why i'm on my 3rd water pump, I have always used WW when I changed the coolant.
