muffler or not will not change the amount of smoke you get. If you are looking to do it on the cheap I would delete the cat and muffler with straight pipe. If that's too load for you then add a muffler back in.

:yup:

The only way you will get more smoke by removing the exhaust is if you have a DPF and you remove it.

Moved here;)!

Your DPF is inline with your exhaust. In laymans terms, it's similar to the catalytic converter in a car, but for a different reason. To remove it, you need a programmer to turn off things like regeneration mode and some sensors that are programmed into your ecm.
Don't worry-your '06 van does not have this:D

They were installed on '07.5 and later GM diesels. Lotsofmiles is one of the redheaded stepchilds on this site with a van also!:D He would be a great guy to compare notes with!

One issue you may run into if you straight pipe it is you may throw some EGR codes for insufficient egr flow. I had this problem on my truck but there are ways to get around it-even without having to purchase a programmer.

If you are replacing the piping from the turbo downpipe back, then bigger is better.:);)
Otherwise just buy the aftermarket 3". It will give you a nice exhaust note which is what you are really after the way I read it!:D

Myself, I have the diamond eye downpipe, and then I straight-piped it back with 4" from there. And yes it is loud!!
