Damage from loss of fluid?

I'm looking at buying an '02 D/A truck. The truck has front end damage from hitting a deer. From the pics, I can see that the trans cooler was gone and a hose has been looped between the two trans lines. From what I can gather, after the truck hit the dear, the driver pulled over as soon as he could find a spot, less than a 1/4 mile. My question is, what damage could have occurred when the cooler was torn off and presumably the fluid was pumping out? What would be signs of trans damage from this?

Thanks
Chris

If I could smell the fluid I could tell you. Sometimes there is no damage and sometimes it is carnage. Smell tells me everything.

Haven't been able to smell it yet. Worst part is the trans was just rebuilt. Truck has 214k miles. I talked to the shop that did it and he said all new Allison clutch packs, planetary something or other and output shaft. Said it was really messed up. He also said at the same time or just a short time before that, he fixed the transfer case from a pump rub deal. The guy who owned the truck last said he only had the truck for about 2000 miles before he hit the dear. Just after he got it, he had to do the trans. Said there are no pyro or boost gauges and didn't know of any power adders, etc... There is a gooseneck ball in the bed. Mike, what would cause such damage to a trans if it wasn't power adders? Low fluid?
