Curious about semi turbos

Was curious if you could use a turbo for say a 60 series Detroit or a cat or something similar in a compound setup?? I’m sure been asked. Tried google couldn’t find anything. Thanks.

Their turbos are generally a little loose in the a/r area for our use. Take a lot more heat and fuel to light.

Would it work sure but not the most ideal setup.

Simple answer is yes but not really recommended like said above. They are designed for engines 2x to 3x the displacement of a duramax and can get away with the looser AR on the turbine side.

Now a Borg 475/96/1.15 or 1.32 T6 is relatively cheap for a box cast charger for something to put over a stock turbo and get stellar results.

My turbo in my 3406E Kenworth is a S480. 80/96 1.45 T6

What turbo are you trying to compound over? If it's a stock turbo or a smaller drop-in a S475/96/1.32 T6 is a cheap option from any Borg Warner dealer in Canada. While better spoolup characteristics can be had with the tighter 1.15 T6 housing, I wouldn't consider it a necessity as it will run great with the 1.32 housing.


The Borg Warner PN is 171702 for the S475/96/1.32 T6. The PN for the 1.15 T6 housing is 14961019007. Another option is buying a turbo from the states and having it shipped in but I am not familiar with how pricey that can be.

I have a htt promax 64 in the valley. I won’t be looking for big power under 750rwhp. Just want good towing and street. Was thinking of using hsp plumbing with factory battery. I have their y-bridge and cai and like their products. if I can get turbo here cheaper that’d be great.

Put it to you this way. If I got $1000 turbo in the states and shipped to the place I pick up in Montana it’d likely end up costing me $1500 Canadian or so.

hey guys, might have my azz suckin slew water but I have a compound setup on my 06 dually. its a compound setup using the factory turbo. after many many miles it needed a rebuild. unfortunatley, the manufactorer of the kit ground off all the numbers. after much searching I have been told by the ex employees of the company that the turbo is a stock s475 that was the same part number for a 2006 Detroit Diesel 12.7 liter. hope that helps:woott: to be clear, it's not from Trent (EPR)

Thats the one. I am in the process of switching to a 1.15 for shlits and gigles
