So my wife and I have started our cross country move to Portland, OR. So far everything has been going smooth. We made it into San Antonio, TX and plan to be in Portland by the 4th of July.
So far long distance towing with the BatMo S475 hasn't been bad. Driving though the mountains in VA and TN was no problem, on up hill passes I had to bump it down to 4th gear and EGT's would sit in the 1000-1100* range.
I ran into problems with it when we passed though Memphis. All the sudden there was a 20-30mph head/cross wind. That made towing a bit more challenging. Once we got into TX the wind dropped a little but the temps climbed so EGT's where still a chore (wanted to sit at 1300* at 65 mph in 5th a little warm for 125K miles on LBZ pistons IMO) I used Semi's to help cut the wind most of I-30 and I-35. Once the wind died off everything was back to normal though. So far I maintained 11 mpg through the mountains and hills. Once I hit the head wind mileage dropped to 8.2 mpg.
Next stop after a week long break here in San Antonio is Santa Maria, CA. So I'll get to see how it does in some bigger mountains through CA and OR.
Wish me luck and hope my motor doesn't give up till we make it to Portland.
