I have a high mileage duramax. Has 370k now when the crank decided to give out. Truck is super clean and for the price I got it I couldn't say no. Now the question is, do I swap the motor or do I build it? Realistically I'm looking to make 600-650. What will I be expecting will be damaged and what should I replace while in there? Or do I just swap it with a low mileage motor. I do have a budget of 6-7k in parts

biggest thing is if you spun a main bearing and how bad. if its enough to mess up the bore or it was heat checked, the block is trash. the journals also need to be magged very well as cracks can occur there.

basically, your 50/50 if the block is even usable. there are no oversized bearings for these block that let you really bore out the mains from a spun bearing

If you only have 6-7K as a budget you better find a good running one cause you will never build that one to make 600-650 for 6-7K.

i dont agree but its all dependent on his block. cant put much of a number for cost till we know the condition internally

What about an lml complete short block or even another LLY short block? Do Pistons wear down heavily? 600 is a pretty achievable number for just motor work. I believe.

Say he does get his engine done within his budget the next thing to go with that much HP and that many miles on it is gonna be the tranny, that's why I say it would be better to find another engine.

I'm going off the constraints he's giving us. Your assuming he either doesn't have a built Trans or isn't planning on one.

Your right James, I am assuming he doesn't have a built trans because of him saying this "Has 370k now when the crank decided to give out. But that's just me assuming.

I bought truck with 300k. For how much it was beat on. I got my money's worth out of it. Trans is getting built. I'm just talking about motor, nothing else. Already purchased 3" y bridge w/ IC pipe, 3" down pipe

Are you building it yourself or are you going to have someone else do it?

Come on Slim, no need to get up tight about this. i think its all laid out pretty clear here now and the 6-7k for his ENGINE that he asked about isnt far off depending on block condition. chillllllllll :D :hug:

So if my block isn't bad I can get by with 6-7k or am I better off just getting a used motor somewhere if block is bad?
