So I've been noticing light white smoke coming from my front left fender after running the truck for awhile and especially after running it hard. So I took it to two desiel mechs and they both said its my upper oil pan. One of them gave me a "worst case scenario " quote if he was to have to change the oil pan. He said since its 4x4 he will have to take the front axel off the change it . Does this sound right? If I'm missing any info just let me know. Ill post a pic of the quote in a sec.

Thanks,
Tano

The upper engine oil pan to block has no gasket, it's RTV, the only gasket is the lower oil pan to the upper pan, and that is not anywhere close to 100$...

x2. Would be kinda hard to remove the upper engine oil pan without removing the back engine cover, there are 4 allen bolts that are deeply recessed into the rear cover on the very back of the oil pan.

There is no gaskets on ether oil pan that i know of

I thought so too, but Henry's gasket kit I bought had a paper gasket for lower oil pan to upper connection.

I don't think GM puts one on in the factory, only the Victor Reinz gasket maker, but the rebuild kits include one.

I am not much for aftermarket gaskets...but it wouldn't surprise me if they include one in there kits ive seen many of there kits for other engines and they put all sorts of diff gaskets on them imo just use gm rtv all the way:thumb:

Just did a piston and rod swap on my lly. No gaskets on either of the oil pan interfaces. Also the 4 bolts on the back of my engine are not allen but standard hex head. Got lucky and could pull them without pulling the flexplate, but most end up pulling the flex plate. Flex plate bolts are TTY so the will need to be replaced.

If you were to try and change it in the truck, yes the front diff has to come out to remove the upper oil pan. Also the transmission has to come out (which means pulling the starter).

Because there are bolts that are covered up by the trans bell housing you can't get to any other way

It is possable to sneak around the flywheel. Saves having to remove and replace the flywheel bolts at the least.
