Just looking to see what some of your guys opinions are on removing high mileage glow plugs. My truck has 213k miles. I am doing head gaskets this weekend, and plan on replacing the glow plugs while apart. I know the trucks only ever had 1 glow plug replaced its whole life. I have been spraying them with penetrating oil all week when I get to work. I am sure some will break. Whats your guys tricks on getting old rusty/corroded glow plugs out? I had someone say use a little 1/4 impact lightly to jar the corrosion free and then progressively go harder at it. Iv used ratchets in the past and had them come out and some break.... I thought the impact method was silly, BUT......ford protocol on removing triton 3v spark plugs is to use an impact gun...maybe its not that bad of an idea....whats your guys thoughts?

I just did some on my LBZ. I sprayed them with PB Baster twice a week for a month before I changed them out. When I went to do them I got the engine up to running temp and they came out vary easy.

Since you are already pulling the heads, get them off and on a bench and exhaust manifold removed, then heat the aluminum around the glow plug threads and I use my 3/8" 12v cordless impact to buzz them lose while head is hot...

When you get em off heat them up and put some candle wax on them, the little birthday candles work great. When it cools it will pull in the wax and they'll come right out

That's the way I change one in a running truck, but they can still twist off.

50-50 mix of acetone and atf as penetrant then straight on with a 6 pt deepwell worked for me at 150 k on the LH bank and at 200 k for the RH bank. With the heads off should be a piece of cake for you.

coke. Works like the wax. I would put the heat on the glow plug and not the head and cool it down with coke. If you do heat the head be VERY careful. Alumn doesn't get red like metal. It just starts to melt and distort. Don't ask me how I know lol. The wax and the atf method are very good also.
