I have a 2002 Duramax that seems to be burning coolant. We can't find a leak anywhere but it went through an entire gallon of coolant in 12 miles. It white smokes heavily at an idle but not when accelerating. There is no coolant in the oil. It has only overheated once. Any ideas on what the problem could be? We were thinking injectors than we thought maybe a head gasket. Any help is appreciated. Thank you!

The easiest way to find missing coolant is to pressurize the cooling system with an adapter. Put it up to 15 PSI for 30 minutes, and if you have a leak, it will have pushed a lot of coolant out somewhere. Just be careful not to hydrolock your motor, because an internal leak (head gasket, cracked head) can fill a cylinder and do bad things if you try to start it.

I will try that. Thank you! I am not sure if the injectors have been replaced. I have only had the truck about 3 months and it has only been in running condition for one month due to it needing a water pump.

If you're up in the rust belt be careful taking them out. Soak with penetrating oil. Or use an air hammer adapter.
