coolant problem

A buddy of mine has a 04.5 lly and he is having low coolant issue's. u can smell coolant but can not see it. ive checked all over the motor head gaskets seem to be ok and everything eles. Im not sure it isnt putting the coolant threw the egr and blowing it out the exhaust if thats possiable. there is no leaks under the truck at all. can anyone give me some hints on places to check?

Check the very front of the motor....Water pump, mine is on it's way out....will leak about half a gallon every 300 miles. She is getting tore apart this weekend finally.....

it could be the water pump this is the 4th one thats been put in the truck it has 180k on it
