New here and new to duramax's. I bought a 2005 bone stock with 130,000 miles on it yesterday for what i think was a really good deal or so i thought. It was a trade in so not much history on the truck but when they were cleaning it they noticed coolant coming out the overflow. i havent actually seen it leak but on the way home the low coolant light came on so i added half a gallon. made it home with no issues. doesn't overheat and the heat in the cab works but i can smell coolant. Ive been researching and it sounds like either egr or hg's. Any help on where to start to find the problem would be appreciated

So I'm confused now. I drove the truck for a couple hours today and didn't loose any coolant and I don't smell it anymore.

If you can, I would pressurize the coolant system and see if you have any leaks there without the truck running. HG failure and EGR cooler leaks can be similar in symptoms. After you let it cool down after a couple of hours, is the top radiator hose hard? Is the surge tank dirty? What about the coolant?

Are you planning on doing an EGR delete? If yes, then I would get the kit and see if it still is having the same symptoms.

I plan on blocking the egr and bypassing the cooler this weekend just to rule that out. Also get a new cap just for the hell of it. It's been fine all week except the other day after it had been sitting for about 8 hours i opened the degas tank and it had pressure and kinda burped some coolant out. once i started it i could't see any bubbles. the coolant is clean and the upper rad hose doesn't seem really hard
