so, i never posted this up before, but i have a coolant leak. i have had it since about 10/08. been chasing it around, dealing with it. then i lost my motor. now that its back together, still loosing coolant. no coolant signs in oil (no milkyness, always drains black and smooth) no visible leaks or traces of coolant that i can see, even when i tore my motor down. sometimes i will just catch a slight whiff of sweetness after i turn the truck off and walk in front of it.

i have no idea what it could be:confused: is the turbo mabye leaking and sending it through the intake and burning it? no sweet smell at the tailpipe. do i have a cracked head that i dont know about?

what can i do to find it?

thanks!!

i don't have a cap for the coolant tank.

???

Ever since we swapped my turbo I smell a little coolant here or there and a little oil every once in a while just the way it is no problems here with functionability ...

X2, Some paces rent tools around here, mitght want to see about that or just buy one

Or maybe By-pass the tank and pressure up the line

good idea on the bypass. ill have to look into an adapter for my resovoir cap too.

i was just mainly wondering if anyone has had any weird issues like this or mabye something out of the ordinary go wrong like radiator, or cracked head...

Yea that would suck.you could alway get a die kit with a black light and look for the leak to see if its somewere inside or hard to see and trace it back

ok, im stumped. been without a cpu for almost a week now. powercord died on me and had to get a new one via warrenty.

but anyways just got the truck back from the dealer today. they pressure checked it twice. once with glow plugs in once without them out. no visable leaks. they pulled the lower intercooler boot, no traces of coolant. oh ya, side note, they said they would warrenty the diagonostic but ended up being $160 cuz of my motor build. jerks.

where the hell am i loosing coolant? any chance its getting on the exhaust side of the turbo and going out the exhaust? what is the next thing i should try?

just driving 8 miles my resovoir went down about an inch. i was hotrodding it to test if it still leaked or not. (the harder i drive it the faster i loose it)

sorry for long post, but i seem to be at the end of a dead end road

Is it possible the egr could be leaking?? You have no visible leaks anywhere?? Do you have any sweet smells coming from the exhaust??

blocker plate and coolant bypassed with a 180* u shape hose back into the firewall

so the dealer pressurized the system and it didnt leak?

water pumps leak or that lil hose in front and then gets thrown by the fan so it is hard to tell if it is there that is leaking

But if it is pressurizing the sytem to the point that its blowing out there is not many things it can be

You should of bought the cap to pressure it your self,I would be pulling the glow plugs and check them out, crank the truck over in the morning and pull the plugs the night before

i am going to buy a cap. i will pull the plugs and pull the exhaust off the downpipe. let it sit over night and check in the morning. ill try sniffing up the exhaust and see if i smell anything. mabye ill even try running it with the plugs out and pressurized.

whatever my problem is, the harder i run it, the faster i loose coolant. whether it is rpm or boost related i dont know. just throwing this out there, but mabye my turbo is leaking internally and going out the exhaust?

checked all my fluids. machine shop resurfaced heads and were supposed to check them over

Check your water pump. I searched for about a week before I found out mine was leaking out the little weep hole in the bottom of it. Other then that I didnt see anywere it could be leaking until that.

Motohed, what did you ever figure out on your truck. I have an 02 LB7 that is doing the same thing, loosing about a quart a week or more, not puddles anywhere when its parked, oil is clean, head gasket test comes back clear. Thinking its my turbo housing, had a buddy or two tell me they've seen them crack on occasion, cause if I run it harder, the exhaust smells like coolant.
