Posting on behalf of my brother. There are many LBZ posts about coolant loss generally resulting in hg as the culprit, but i started a new thread due to the quantity of coolant. He is the original owner of an 06 LBZ with 340k miles give or take. Would need to clarify but i think he did hg maybe 100k miles ago. He says he is going through a gal of coolant a week sometimes every couple of days. Not a single drop on the ground, no visible leaks, no puking out of tank, oil looked ok, no exhaust vapor/steam/whatever. Pressure test showed 1-2 psi drop in 30 mins. Its a daily driver and tows frequently for work without any obvious performance loss, says it runs like a champ hahaha. I seem to think if it was a head gasket issue, at this rate wouldn't it "hydrolock" a cylinder preventing it from firing, resulting in odd engine performance? He pulled his glowplugs too, wouldnt there be signs there? Am i on the right thought track here, or am i over thinking it and he more than likely needs new head gaskets? Oh and its stock except for an afe intake, downpipe back exhaust and edge juice w/attitude.

Water pump? Could be leaking internally? But a gallon seems like a lot. Does the exhaust smell sour?
Possible but wouldn't it leak into oil? He changed his oil recently and seemed to drain the right amount. He is going to keep close watch of the oil level. Exhaust smells normal.

I was told that maybe it only leaks when he builds boost pressure while on the road so I'm gonna take a long shot and try to strap a gopro under it in the hope that I can spot some drips. Curiosity is getting the best of me hahaha.

Little update... He said he recently filled up coolant on a long haul and forgot to put the cap back on. Got to destination to check level and found both his cap still there and all the coolant, didn't lose a drop.

Additionally, I drove behind him today getting on the freeway and he laid into a bit. Blew way more black smoke than a mostly stock truck should and all the sudden it turned pure white. I could tell he let off and it still poured a steady white cloud for a few minutes after.

Could be a bad egr cooler. Yes, he edge can clear the codes.

I am also going to guess it is the egr cooler. Just bypass the line and run it straight to the heater core. After a couple weeks repair the leaky quick disconnects going to the heater core, from disturbing them when re-routing. If he decides to keep it this way buy an egr blocker plate.

So by saying its the egr, where would the coolant be going? Diverted into the intake manifold and burned up in the cylinders? Again, that's a lot to burn up so I just want to make sure I understand correctly.

20 minutes and a few feet of heater hose and you will know for sure. But yes it will go into the intake. And if you are seeing a white cloud out the exhaust under acceleration then that would be a decent amount of coolant.

Long time for a follow up but I hate threads that dead end so here is outcome. My brother followed egr advise and was able to get his hands on a new egr. After replacing it the truck only lasted a few days. Oil filled up with coolant (ate a gal of coolant in 15 min drive) and he figured since his engine was full of milky goo now anyways he would tear down for head gaskets. 1 week teardown, 1 week machine shop, and 1 week rebuild later (working nights) revealed the same issue. Lost coolant on his first drive around. Without many more options he suspected the water pump. After replacing, sure enough, truck is back in order. Had he not needed the truck as bad as he did he may have found that sooner and saved some heartache. Just wanted to get the result back out to the guys that had some advise.
