So I have this new laptop and the anti virus (norton) has expired. I am running windows vista and am looking for suggestions on a new/better program. This computer is my efilive computer aswell as net surffer. I also have a desktop computer that is her photo storage computer and it has thousands of digital pics on it and it crashed once but all was saved luckly. What kinda of storage divice could I use to store that many damn pics to with out the risk of loss? Thanks, Eric

If you want to stick with a "commercial" (read pay for) anti virus I'd suggest McAfee over Norton. However if you want anti virus protection that doesn't cost you and has kept 5 of my machines clean for years now... download and install ClamWin anti virus. It works well, keeps things clean and is just an antivirals app, it does one job and does it well.

You question on storage revolves around the phrase "without loss". First I have to say that it's impossible to safeguard it 100%. That being said a way to increase the probability of not loosing data would be to keep data on some type of "hard" media. It's the safest way for a "normal user" to keep data. I'd recommend burning them to DVD as a safeguard. If you are looking for some type of spinning disk that is not going to go away if your primary hdd takes a crap, pick up an external USB drive and copy them over there.

Hope that helps.

That is what I have gone to. They are really cheap now like $50. I have 2 now just in case one takes a crap.

Running Bitdefender. Hasn't let me down yet, like McAfee and Norton. X2 on the external HD. Run you backups to it then fully disconnect it and put it somewhere it's not going to get 'abused'.

to be perfectly honest, if you are careful and smart when using your computer and surfing the internet, you dont even need an antivirus program. I have not had any antivirus software on my laptop for over a year and have never had any problems. I DO backup my stuff regularly, but knock on wood never had a problem.

Now on the other hand, our computer at home, I could have antivirus software up the wazoo on it and my mom or dad will still find some way to get it messed up. :D
