My 01 Chev w/Allison has a hard time getting into gear when cold. The shift lever is almost frozen and it takes some effort to move it.
Today -22 it was unusually hard but I was able to get it in reverse then forward and driven w/o problems to work (15 minutes), when I tried to shit to park the shift lever wouldnt move at all. After some persuasion the lever seemed to move freely and now it is stuck in D and I have shut the truck off.
Prior to this when the truck warmed it would shift normally.
Any suggestions/help even to get it back in P so I can restart the truck to get it to a service shop would be appreciated.

allison makes a little sheild that prevents ice and snow from freezing around the NSBU switch (which makes it hard/impossible to shift) on the outside of the trans.

I have no idea what the part number is though. :(

I have pulled the cable at the NSBU switch and the lever on the switch moves freely. I was able to easliy shift to N and start the vehicle.
I assume the cable is bad/broken. It looks like the cable might be a 2 piece unit (correct?)
Again thanks for the quick replies

Cable is a 2 piece but it is sold as a 1 peice unit. Cable can be separated and lower piece connected to old top piece for ease of installation.

Thank you gentlemen. I will search out a new cable.
Once installed I will report back but I am sure this will resolve my problem.

A thank you for those that responded.
I removed the cable and the e-clip that holds the 2 halves together failed and got wedged in the cable housing. A couple of strands of the outer wrapping broke and ended up wedging in the housing as well. All of this was discovered in an attempt to repair the cable by myself to no avail.
Again thanks to all.
