Cluster randomly cuts out

I have a 2003 LB7 2500HD, I replaced both heads, one was clearly leaking coolant into the cylinders. I just got it back together this weekend and now I'm having a strange issue.

Truck starts up better than before but sometimes the cluster guages do not work. It still shows the odometer and P R N D and any lights, they work just fine just the actual dial guages stay at the bottom. If I restart the truck a few times they will kick back on.

When I try to read the codes, most of the time my scanner will tell me there is like 58 codes set off but it wont let me read them. Sometimes it does let me read the codes, but only when the guages are working and its only 1 code for the Baro Pressure Sensor (I missplaced the sensor while doing the heads)

I did move my batteries under the cab by the passenger door, so I am going to double check my grounds this weekend but it does seem strange to me that it would start up and periodically everything would work fine with a bad ground.

Is there anything else I should be looking for to try to fix this?

Clusters tend to do weird things after you have the batteries disconnected for a while. Try unplugging the cluster itself and plugging it back in with the truck on, that's what I did when my truck did the same thing and they've worked right ever since. Of course this was about two years after I had the cluster rebuilt due to the stepper motors going out.

I'll try that, just got off the phone with a GM tech he said my cluster may be bad, and its possible it can be shorting out the dataline causing my scanner to be unable to read the codes.

It's possible. Swap clusters if you have access to another one.

Bad batteries can cause damn near anything in our trucks

Good point though

one battery was just replaced, the side post socket melted out of it when i first hooked it up to start the truck, got it replaced under the battery warranty. The other battery is 11 months old bought at the same time as the other one. But I will double check them, they havent been in the truck since January this year.

I'm gonna check my grounds on the pass side of the motor, and try to unplug replug the cluster too. Thanks guys
