Well for a while now my truck has been making an obnoxious clatter all the way from idleing to full throttle. The clatter speeds up with rpm in a uniform fashion and its driving me nuts. My truck has 40% over injectors and i just had efi live tunes written for it. Since installing efi live the noise has gotten quieter when cruising but still the same at idle. My clutch isnt in very good shap and the dual mass flywheel is most likely shot as well but i dont know if that is whats making the sound. Any insight is appreciated.

You'd be surprised at the noises that stupid flywheel makes  I don't think that's your noise though, I'm stumped. No smoke at idle or anything?

Worse when cold? How old are the injectors? Sounds to me like some sort of injector knock, but I am no professional.

Wish I could help! That's one noise my truck didn't make  . It could be the flywheel, but I'd be surprised if yours was worse than mine and mine didn't make that noise. Does it change when you push the clutch in? I could be wrong but I think this test could rule out clutch/flywheel noise. With the truck idling put it in 1st gear and hold the brake. Let out of the clutch till you feel it start to want to take off. Doing that will put the clutch and flywheel under tension. If the noise goes away there's a good chance it is clutch/flywheel related but if it doesn't it's probably internal engine.

That's just what I'd do, anyone feel free to chime in if that's not helpful :thumb:

I would bet its injector rattle , or exhaust leak , but if it was exhaust leak it wouldn't change with tuning changes might need the tuning adjusted , one way to check is take the DVT tool , and set the rail pressure to 7k , with it locked in at 7k rev the truck up and see if it goes away .

if it does go away when i do this then what is the problem? If not where else should i look?

2 things , could be bad injector , or it could be simply a tuning change needed for the larger injectors . Also do you have a stock fuel pressure regulator or a modded / LBZ ?

The tune was supposed to be written for the injectors. I have the stock fpr. Is checking the balance rates the only way to check for a bad injector? What stumps me is the truck still runs great, builds boost immediatly, and makes 70psi of oil pressure under acceleration. There are no symptoms of any problems other than the noise.

Not all injectors take the same changes to make work , some can still run on stock tune , minus lowering pulse width , other have to have alot more , I had a set of 60% overs recently that were harder to tune then my 200% overs , just try the test first and report back and see what you come up with , it may not even help .

Ok thanks Trent, i will try that as soon as i can get to my buddys house that has the efi live v2. I appreciate the help so far.

Well i think by deductive reasoning ive found the problem. After doing a balance rate test and discovering that the rates on 3 injectors bounce in and out of spec i immediatley did the gm injector cleaning procedure. Afterward there was no change in the clattet or balance rate so i started doing research on what exactly causes injector rattle. Since it has been doing this for a year with no change and no signs of bad injector bodies i have pretty much ruled out bad injector bodies. Injector tips on the other hand are a different story. Today i called the place where i got my injectors from to ask who hones the tips for them as mine are 40% over and pretty much got told "no were not telling". After all this the best i can figure is my injectors were not flow matched correctly causing the cylinders to be off balance and making it clatter due to different amounts of fuel going to each cylinder. Could i be on to something here?

Ever do this test ? have to rule out tuning before a bad tip can be blamed . if you cant tune it out or it takes drastic changes that are not normal then you could logically move to it being the tips IMOP .
