Apparently there are two ways to check this? One is to install snap ring in the lower groove prior to sun gear and C-2 backing plate and measure. In which case measurement is good. Or install sun gear, backing plate and snap ring (top groove) and then measure. In which case measurement no good. This tranny has smoked C-2's twice now. This time I'm building it and want this thing right.

.072 without backing plate. .005 with. I've checked bearings they are in correctly. I also double checked C-1 clutch hub, it is seated correctly as well.

Just figured it out! I'm good. Got parts from George at Suncoast. Thats why I knew it had to be me lol. You go by the measurement without the backing plate. Just saw that the backing plate rests on three teeth which is exactly where the snap ring goes for measuring. I know this probably doesnt make sense. Sorry

Think about this: The C2 clutch in every stock Allison 1000 comes with 6 clutches and 7 steels. There is no adjustability in this clutch pack, so if your aftermarket clutch stack sums up to the OEM stack than your clearance must be right?????? Opinions welcome.

Not necessarily, Aftermarket clutches/steels are often set to different tolerances not to mention most builders have different stacks/tolerances they prefer to use..

Yup George made it so LOL . I was confused when I got to the C-2 pack and the instructions said I should have a stepped bottom plate 6 .086 steels and 1 .067 steel and I had no bottom plate and 8 .086, 1 .067 steels.
Haha Gorge changed it faster than the instructions could.LOL
It is now pretty much like the stock pack no bottom plate use the thin steel only if clearance required.:thumb:
