I just turned the key on my '06 LBZ and was greeted without a start. I manually pumped the primer, cranked, and repeated this about 10 times. The pump seemed to function normally, but after a few seconds of cranking the engine over, the primer went limp.
Is there a better way to prime the system? It was all apart, meaning the fuel rails were off, the fuel lines, etc. The engine was running good prior to the tear down, and injectors and glow plugs were not messed with. looking for advise on getting the beast started and what I'm doing wrong.

Did you just change the fuel filter? Check to make sure its tight, Also open up the bleeder screw and see if there is air in the system.. Diesel will eventually come out.

Why did you have the fuel rails off?

If the connections to the rails are not tight that can cause an issue, but i would thik it would at least fire up...?

A lift pump is an in line fuel pump that usually mounts on the drivers side frame rail just in front of the fuel cooler in fornt of the fuel tank.

They tylically have a water filter and a 2micron fuel filter built into the housing and the pump draws fuel through the factory fuel pickup and sends it off to the CP3 under low pressure (8-12psi) most lift pumps nowdays also remove air bubbles found in the fuel stream and divert them back to the fuel tank via a purge hose that gets connected to a special collar (comes with the install kit) that gets installed into the fuel filler neck, so the fuel that reaches the CP3 is a pure and solid stream of filtered filtered fuel...this helps your engine run at its peak potential while also extending the lifespan of critical high pressure fuel system components

You need one if you dont have one and its tragic GM didnt equip our trucks with them from the factory

There is no lift pump, but I've noticed a high pressure fuel leak. I must have a fitting loose on a rail, as when I crank for 5-10 seconds I then get some fuel running down the back of the engine.
I will go tackle the leak issue and try again.
ps: Glad I could amuse, now I know what a lift pump is.
