And need to haul your Dmax around safely?

We are using a Blue Ox Aventa LX Tow Bar.

It's rated at 10,000lb which is unlike most tow bars. Normally we have just used it for LSR racing at the track (we aren't allowed to drive the truck in the pits at LSR events), but for the first time we towed Casper to the dragstrip with it. About 400 miles round trip, with no problems. As with any towbar, you cannot back up with it attached, so always remember what's behind you.

It mounts where the recovery hooks go, and you buy a kit that fits the Duramax when you buy the tow bar. After initial install, it takes no tools to hook up or remove it, and it can be done in less than 2 minutes. It folds up on itself so you can drive the tow vehicle with it attached and folded. If you get the adapter for it, you can plug the tow lights right into the round tow connector. Simple way to install the wiring is to just follow the directions and drill a 1" dia hole in the inside of your tail light housing. This way you leave the factory wiring alone.

PS - I didn't have the safety cables on when I snapped the pictures. You buy the "deluxe" towbar kit, and it comes with safety cables and wiring. You will buy the Duramax mounts and trailer plug adapter separately.

Nice, unless you have some type of failure or accident that won't allow it to be flat towed..

I can see it being handy for LSR or to a local strip, but one 200 miles away:eek:

I doubt BIG BLUE has any issues stopin Casper, that is cool pat. We pull our duece and a halfs around with a tow bar rated at 30K takes 3 guys to mount it, but it is alot better than haulin with a 3/4 ton D-Max.

Neat.

Any issues or concerns with braking?

You will certainly know it's there. :D

We towed to the racetrack with the motorhome (it can't haul the trailer), and it had no problems braking. Blue can stop it, but I can see it would be hard on the brakes after awhile. They do make remote braking devices, but I didn't buy one.

No, a trailer is certainly better, but trailers for 6500lb+ vehicles aren't all roses. Our trailer cost 10x what the towbar did, and it doesn't store as easy, nor is it as quick to load and unload.

Hey Pat did you have the front wheels locked? We tow bar the duece and a halfs witht the wheel in free spin, so you can back up it is hard but it can be done.

Yes, the Dmax has no steering lock, and we don't tie it. Nor would you want to.

If you are in a perfectly straight line, you can back up. But because of the kingpin inclination angle on a car/truck, it will only "self-center" going forward, kind of like shopping cart wheels.

you can back these trucks up flat pulling them i used to do it all the time you just have to watch the tires and make sure they dont start moving. as far as brakes go you can get a device called a brake buddie that pushes the brake pedal but it really doesnt do anything these trucks are so hard to stop with out the motor running. the best way to get brakes is by putting an air acuated cylinder between the fire wall and the master cylinder i will get a picture of it and post it up. i have 40,000 or so miles towing my truck call me and i can answer any questions you may have about this subject.

does vehicle in tow have to be registered like a trailer does, and have insurance?

I haven't checked the laws. Casper is registered and has full coverage since we are still making payments on him
