how its safe (or legal) for a 70-some year old woman to drive a freakin ClassA motorhome towing a Jeep at 70+mph on the freeway? It had to be a 40 foot RV, for God's sake.

Professional drivers have to get CDLs to drive semi's..why shouldnt people have to get the same training to drive huge RVs?

I just dont get it...

musta been the same lady I saw today on I-69 west bound going towards Lansing.

Oh wait, this old lady had a 2500 extended sprinter with a triple axle enclosed car hauler! maybe she realized it was too much and traded it in on the class A.

If it has air brakes or over a certain weight she has to get cdl.

Also here in Nevada anything over 10k under 26k like a rv or a truck and trailer) you have to get R and J endorsement.

I agree. I drive a 47 passenger charter bus for our church so I have to have my CDL. Even though it is a lot of fun to drive, it’s also takes a lot of responsibility because it is so freak’n huge. Recreation vehicle or not, I think anyone who drives one of these things needs to have their CDL.

I think it varies state to state whether you need a CDL or not for one of these things. I know in the state of TN you are not required as long as the vehicle is registered as a recreation vehicle. Most people here get an old Charter bus and convert it. Seems to me if you needed a CDL to drive it as a Charter, you need one to drive it as a recreation vehicle.

Your right about that, Most must have not for hire on the side and they get away with it with the loop holes in the laws.

Loop holes is it... I know two of my friends that drive these big RV's. (wish i had there money, more toys for the d-max:D) Anyway, as long as it's not for " commercial " use, then hell even my 16 yr old kid could drive it. Not cool.

RV's have an exemption for air brakes so you do NOT need a CDL in any state. My grandfather is very up to date on this matter as he is 80 and still has a 36 footer that weighs in at 33K by itself with full on air brakes and all just like a big rig. He scares me driving his HIGHLANDER, but nobody else in the family will back me up in telling him he is too old too handle his motorhome anymore. I've said it a few times now and am really worried what is going to happen when he gets stressed out and rides down 2 lanes in a construction zone and doesn't see that little car in his blind spot. I don't think they need a CDL, but if it has airbrakes then you should have to have an airbrake endorsement, and I believe they should come out with an RV license. Even years back when FL had a class E and D for non CDL licenses you could drive an RV with an E, but a dually required a D which meant you had to go take a driving test and everything else to prove you knew the trailering laws. Don't you just LOVE lobbyists.
