Can a 4L80E handle a Duramax?

So I do not know the dimensions of it but isn't there a dodge tranny out there that is being used behind the duramax? If so why wouldn't that work as a subsitute?

That would be the DURAFLITE from SUNCOAST. Last I heard it was one expensive SOB to boot. The ALLISON will fit in alot easier than you think. My 95 SUBURBAN's trans tunnel cleared it pretty easily with just a little work with the BFH. A 2" body lift and it would fit in easily with no hammering.

I have a customer with a 1018rwhp GTO & 915ftlb torque through a 4L80E at over 4000lb (9.1@151), so they are pretty tuff, but diesel torque gets pretty extreme.

My 4L80E has 300M input & output shafts, transbrake & 5 disk lockup clutch, but it is slated for a 1000rwhp Camaro. Lots of cool items available for them.
Someone has to be the first to try it....

1200 lb tq at 2600 rpm multiplied by 2.5 from the converter and you have devestation. bring on any 4L85 from any builder and you will lose. Thats a fact.

Wow, you guys have given me a lot of info, some of which scares me a little. I think I need to be a little more specific about it's intended use.

I drive this truck nearly everyday, it will see light duty towing on occasion, fairly extreme rock crawling on the weekends, and I will likely mash the go pedal when I'm getting on the highway. It won't be taken to a track or floored when I'm towing. I just want it to have a fairly good 0-60 time, beyond that it won't be pushed.

I really want to keep the 4L80, one, because it is already in there, and two, because I have already built a 241/241 transfer case doubler setup that is in it and I've already bought extreme angle drive shafts that are in it. If it just absolutely isn't a good idea to use it then I would be willing to cut out my transmission tunnel and replace it with a larger one for the Allison, especially if it can be used with my transfer cases.

Now if you guys think that I would be safe with a built 4L80 for my specific application, I guess the next question is what is the maximum SAFE power level that I could go with. I would like to run at about a 65-80 hp programmer on a LLY. I already have a mandrel 4" exhaust in it, my version of a cold air setup, and it's intercooled. I am open to any and all suggestions.

Thanks a lot for all of the input guys, I really appreciate it.

It will probably be fine in your usage if properly built.

Thanks a bunch Mike.

One more thing, in your opinion, what is properly built? What should I change or have done to it.

it's all about how u drive it the fact that it is 2000 pounds lighter helps a lot..... Just stay with a stock tune and no full throttle 4th gear shifts..... My buddy has a 7004r behind a 400hp camaro and it works fine!

That's what I'm hoping for. I can promise you guys that it won't see any shifts into 4th gear at WOT, I don't want to know what speed my 38's start to fly apart at!

Gear it down lower to avoid loading the driveline as hard, and since you'll be running an electronic tranny program the TCM to disable 4th past say half throttle. You can use some creative programming and actually use that as your safety net to protect it.

That's a good idea on the tranny programing, I hadn't thought of that.

As far as the gearing goes, it has 4:10 gears now, which seem to be a good medium as far as towing and highway speed goes. Then for rock crawling, I've built a 241/241 doubler, with both transfer cases locked into low range it will run just a hair over 15mph in overdrive, so I really want to leave the gearing as it is. It also has old school 1 ton axles, so hopefully they will be up to handles the grunt of a D-max. Fingers crossed!

Edit: I just read your sig and realized your planning a similar swap, I'll be watching!

Well, it looks like I'll be starting this sooner than I had planned and the 4L80 might not be in the mix now. I just hit the Buy-It-Now on an '04 Duramax/Allison/263 combo, so i might be modding the tranny tunnel now.
