In a strict sense of MPG, can a CAI like the S&B dry filter setup be justified?

If I can sneak another 1-2mpg out of the truck that would put me over 20 and I would be a happy camper to say the least.

I don't think you will see much of a mileage increase from an intake. Especially not 2 MPG. You might get a little bump though.

I have seen it help and seen it not help I think there money well spent but I hate factory box's

Pretty much, I find for every one that says it helped, another says the cliched "you don't need it till past 500hp!!"

So, I would rather not gamble on something when I am not looking for power, just efficiency.

Not to knock you, but I was real tired of cleaning filters starting at around 40. I still have a K&N in my 82 and would never consider buying one again. If I purchased an after market CAI it would be a Volant or Injen with a Donaldson filter. I gave up the fuel mileage search long ago considering it is 6500lbs.+ truck.....:D

I would get a dry filter and replace em like stockers when they are dead. No issue there, I just don't wanna throw money at an area that doesn't need it.

I just bought a house so getting the most efficiency out of the truck means less fuel bills. :D Another year or so and its paid off (truck wise), then I can pick up a fuel efficient car.

lts1ow, if you have MS Office Excel check out this loan amortization spread sheet and see what affect optional extra payments have on your overall cost of owning a home with a mortgage.

I hate the stock air boxes on just about any rig.
However the dry filters like the Donaldson filter don't flow bad and are proven to filter better under most circumstances

Have you modded the stock air box yet, for better flow ?
I'd give that effort a go before I pointed you toward spending money on a fancy air box, see if it helps. But if you're anything like me, you'll wind up with an aftermarket piece soon. If you do choose to go aftermarket find a set up that offers a bumper scoop or "ram air" scoop and a box that's completely sealed from the engine bays hot air

That's my .02

I had a stock intake and drop in filter and dynod 554hp running 12.7 at the track. Not sure performance is an issue there.

I personally wouldn't waste my money on a CAI kit but it's just personal preference.

...they also help scoop up water if you live in an area where streets flood.....

I installed the Banks intake with Super Scoop. No issues with flooding streets in SoCal, so I didn't consider that an issue. The Banks setup with Super Scoop was a bit pricey, but it does work. IAT's are within 5 degrees of OAT's. Throttle response is a bit better....cooler air to the turbo is a good which the Banks will deliver....

I modified the stock airbox and threw in an s&b drop in filter on my lly. I pulled that sticky tar backed heat tape from over the holes in the fender and used it to rig up a seal between the airbox and fender. I don't know if it helped flow wise, but while cruising I see IATs within a couple degrees of ambient. Atleast compared to the mirror thermometer.
