I'm looking to get a newer car to be a daily driver, and rather like the CTS. It rides nice, is quiet inside and even the 3.6L v6 in the 04 I drove today is pretty decent on power. The problem is I've been reading that the V6's (it seems like all of the v6 engines in the CTS) have big problems with oil consumption. Does anyone here have any experience with the CTS's motors? Is it really as bit og a problem as it seems? Did GM ever find a fix? If som what year(s) would be best to look for? Obviously, the easiest option would be to get a CTS-V and not have the problems with the V6's, but since they only ovvered hte 1st Gen CTS-V with a 6-speed manual, and I don't want a manual for a DD, then that puts me in the realm of a second gen CTS-V, and there's no way that's happening with how much they cost. A Second Gen v6 may be an option (Especially if the 3.6L LLT Direct Injected motor isn't plauged with the problems the older motors seem to have) as they can be found for reasonable prices, but the CTS-V, not so much...

I know its a german made motor and that is the only car that motor is put in.They have cam gear issuses and the valve covers leak and short out the coils that are 300 a piece. If you find 1 you like make a deal pending an inspection at a gm dealer of your choice and even if it cost you 2 3 400 for a really good inspection......trust me it will be good money spent.Or spend the cash on the extended warrenty and read it very closely and see what they do not cover.

My old ladys got a 2005 CTS and ive been running mobil 1 syth. in it for awhile. It will be my next choice. I always thought they were a little overrated. but as soon as ive driven it 4 hours home, ive been in love! The attention to detail in them are amazing. Hers is as loaded as they come so its got plenty to figure out! lol but we got a extended warranty just because they can be expensive but as if a duramax is cheap!! lol Great car so far! BTW easy as hell for oil changes.

I've got one and it's not too bad for a DD, especially if you get rid of the skip shift.

Which motor are you referring to? I'm pretty sure none of them are German made, but have 'influence' from the US, Austrailia and Europe, but are made in the US. Also, I believe that at least the 3.6 is found in several other vehicles, including at least one Saturn. I BELIEVE the cam gear issues were the early 08's, with in-service problems fixed with either a new head or a spacer placed on the cam gear. The problem was supposedly resolved mid way through the year. Apparently it was a manufacturing issue with the cam. I fI were to get an extended warranyt, it would, in all likelyhood, be the GM Major guard, if it still exists. I had that on my 97 Chevy that I had before my 04 and it was great. Had a handful of issues, including transfer case failure and never paid a dime.
