The last set of HG's I did I decided to set the camera up across the shop and do this video. Its not descriptive of what to do at all, and you really can tell at all either. I do have a write-up with pictures in the works but dont have it finished yet.

I just kind of made this one for fun and to show its really not that hard to do. This video is a time lapse at about 5x.

Interesting vid. What is the proper name for the ladder with elbow pad you used to lean over the motor? Also, what was the purpose of removing the cab?

Topside creeper, awesome invention.

Headgaskets is the main reason people remove the cab. Makes the job faster and easier.

How long did it end up taking you?

In this video with intteruptions 2.5 hours. Without it ended up being under 2.

I think its a topside crepper, they look nifty. Cool video Vinny

One of the many great inventions. But built for a 5' 10" person. Someday I am going to cut off all of the steps and space them out more, I'm always cramped on the thing. i already cut off the lowers shin beater step.

Thanks.

Great video Vinny!! Although come on, 22 minutes long and you couldnt fit ONE kesha song in there? Brian (hondarider) is gonna be pissed when he sees this. :D :p:

It really is not as big a job as people would generally think. The first time I did it, I thought "well here goes nothing". Took about 3 hours. Now that ive done a couple, its about 2 hours, maybe a bit less. It is a big help to have a friend watching stuff as you lift the cab up, to make sure no wires, etc get caught up.

On the 01-02 chevy's its really tricky getting the core support out from under the bumper, which is why taking the bumper off makes it easier. However on the 2003+ chevy's and the GMC's, personally ive never found a need to take off the bumper.

And I couldnt really see it in this video, what Vinny did with the wiring harness, but you can do it two ways...disconnect everything from the trans, ABS module, and transfer case, and let it all go up with the truck, or just disconnect everything from the underhood fuse box and leave the harness attached to the frame. Personally, I like to do the latter...you're already in the UBEC, so its just as easy to let the wires hang down and not have to mess with the tranny etc connectors.

Anyway, awesome job Vinny. This, along with your guide, will be a huge help to everyone who has a lift and isnt sure how to go about it...hats off.

Yep...easier than pulling the motor, AND, unlike pulling the motor, since the engine is still bolted to the frame, when you go to torque the head studs, the engine doesnt want to move around on you. You can just sit on the front tire and go to work.

Some idiot on the diesel place said he's done head gaskets in 6 hours with the engine in the truck, and the cab on, but id have to see it to believe it.

That was a really cool video and having the accessibility to a lift and removing the cab like you did I can see the reason why you would go through that procedure no matter how long it took as the ease and accessibility to do head gaskets would be ten fold easier!

Thanks for sharing.

While I was watching I did think that I was watching Ben work on any given day! Thats just the way he runs around 5x normal than anyone else! :roflmao:

Ill have to make a second one for you two. Kinda forgot about Ke$ha around here, no new songs, not played on the radio much anymore, kinda fell off the face of the earth. Sounds like shes working on a new album though.

As for the bumper, its easier on the older ones. I like having it out of my way anyways, I take the tires off too for a little more room, and on this truck with the big lift I just set it down on some 6x6s.

The first time I did it, i disconnected everything from the trans and such, but left the tailights etc. Then you mentioned doing it the other way, and ive done it that way ever since, leaving everything with the frame, so much faster and easier. Cut a lot of time off that way.

Yep...easier than pulling the motor, AND, unlike pulling the motor, since the engine is still bolted to the frame, when you go to torque the head studs, the engine doesnt want to move around on you. You can just sit on the front tire and go to work.

Way easier than pulling the motor. I pulled one last summer for some internal work and was tempted to pull the cab and then the motor since its so cramped working on getting the motor out when compared to removing the cab.

But for headgaskets, never again will I do them any other way, and that guy who claims 6 hours must have everything impact tight with the old gaskets used and nothing cleaned. And even then, not a chance. Working at a steady pace it takes about 6 to get the cab off and engine ripped down. Then cleaning, that takes forever, and then building it back up is a little slower, but the cab seems to go back on faster than it comes off. I thought it was just me but somebody else said that too.

I guess I will have to try this on the next one I do. On an in cab headgasket job, I can usually have the heads off in roughly 5-6 hrs depending on my motivation.
