C2 Clutchs

Several years ago I had my transmission built. It worked flawlessly for probably 60,000 miles. Then I did something stupid. I pulled about 33,000 pounds up an eight % grade. (Steepest spot) I had it in tow haul, but not in 4wd. so my torque didn't lock in 1st. Needless to say I screwed up my transmission. C2 Clutches were out)

Had it rebuilt and less than 8,000 easy miles the C2 clutches went out again. They told me they didn't know what caused them to go out the 2nd. time. Before it went out early once in awhile it seemed we run over something in the road, and there wasn't anything there. The transmission wasn't abused.

They rebuilt it again and now I'm a little leery of pulling with it not knowing what caused it the 2nd time.

I had a Suncoast 6sd conversion in it and we put the 5sd back in it, just in case. I sent the 6sd valve body back to Suncoast to have them check it out. They didn't find anything wrong with it, but freshened it up anyway. No charge. Kudos to Suncoast. A very reputable company whom I will try to support whenever I can.

Speed sensor were changed. Transfer case is okay.

Any thoughts?

Thanks

What clutches were in it? I had a set of ALTOS do the same thing. I pulledm ine out because of a torn C3 apply piston, and found my C2's almost down to metal when I was in it. I'm not much over 400HP at the wheels, only raced it a few times, and don't normally tow more than 10-12K pounds with it. I put RAYBESTOS clutches back in it after many said this was the way to go.

I would be looking in the front rotating assembly for a problem with C2 piston or mis-assembly of the Transgo piston mod to C2.

My first thought is the torque converter never locks in 1st unless you have some sort of external device such as a switch or controller to force it, and even then, 5 speed Allisons will only lock in 1st under very special circumstances if at all. Secondly, pulling 33k lbs up an 8% grade should not even slightly damage a properly built Allison. You have something else going on and need to have it fixed ASAP. My third thought is if the shop tried to blame the C2 clutches going out on the converter not locking in first you need to run away as fast as you can because the C2 clutch doesn't even engage until 4th gear, and even if the converter never locked, it shouldn't cause any damage to a clutch pack.

What had happened, I got it really hot. I should have put it in 4 low, and pulled the hill in probably 3rd. Then my torque would have been locked and not generating the heat. I got stuck on stupid.

The 2nd rebuild had never pulled anything heavy or had a lot of power put to it.

I asked what clutches they used and was told:
Raybesto
Red Alto
BorgWarner.

I'm not blaming the rebuilder, but would like to know what caused it the 2nd time.

I'm even considering taking it to Mike L and having him go through it.

Bring it down and I will show you what happened on tear down. Lately I have been doing a lot of re-does from other shops.

Define really hot. There is no need to pull that in 4low. Blame it on whatever makes you happy. I smell a bad build and a worse rebuild. Go to Mike, like you should have, and be done with it.
