Tried to do a very soft 4wd launch tonight to show off for a few friends and busted my cv shaft slam off at the boot. Crawled home, figured I could slide it out and just run 2wd till I got another one. Took it out for a test drive and heard a clunking and popping sound. Immediately noticed the tire can flex god know hows much in all directions.

I'm wondering if I also ruined my wheel bearing as well....or could it just be from not having the cv shaft in? The entire hub assembly was just replaced not 20k ago. How the hell could a light 4wd launch also tear that up????At any rate, I have to fix it tomorrow (only means of transportation have to get back to school) and need to know if I just need a new cv shaft and spare the $500.00 on a new unneeded bearing.

Thanks

I would think your bearing would be fine but its easy to check it. If you do end up needing a new hub/Bearing assembly order it from a vendor, I just bought 2 new one's shipped to my door for $400.00.....

Doesnt the CV shaft hold the hub and all that into place and if u pull a shaft you at least need to leave the outer attached? Or is that only the half tons.

Sorry... my mind is hazy this morning :baby:

Did you leave the end in the hub with the nut still on the shaft?

YOU HAVE TO LEAVE THE END IN THE BEARING WITH THE NUT ON THE SHAFT!!!!!!!!!!!

THERE'S NOTHING HOLDING THE UNIT BEARING TOGETHER AND YOU WHEEL IS GOING TO FALL OFF!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I learned from my mistakes...... I guess "test driving it" with the cv completely out ruined my bearing. Othrgrl helped me install a new cv and hub assembly today. Everything is fine now. Wish I would have known that b4 hand.

So how is a 2wd 2500hd any different? It doesn't have a cv axle and yet the splines still exist in the center of the hub. There are 4 bolts holding the hub together which then holds the tire. I don't think it could fall off. At any rate, I ruined my bearing somehow.

Here's a pic of a 2wd, looks identical to mine without a cv:

The hub is pressed together at the factory, but the shaft must be through it and torqued down, otherwise the hub will fail and possibly separate.

The 4 bolts do not hold the hub together, just the hub to the knuckle.

2wd hub is not the same, and does not have the same splines, atleast not under my 03 2wd.
