Yes, take it to a plating shop like a rechromer or bumper shop. May have to send it to another state, but have the plating stripped off. Had mine done a few years back on another vehichle and was about $40.
Then metal prep, epoxy primer and then basecoat and clearcoat if 2 stage paint or just paint with color if single stage. Most definately use urethane paint.

I plan on taking it somewhere to have it and a few other parts stripped and powder coated in a couple years but i want to do something temporary until . One of the bodyshop guys at work told me to use prep and blend with a scotch brite pad to rough it up and then use self etching primer and then apply whatever paint i want so i might try that.

Not only that. You could sell the chrome ones, buy painted ones, all the stuff to make the color you want, and still have money for beer while your doing it.:D

i just painted my front bumper when it was off the truck for head gaskets and i scuffed the chrome with 80 and and orbital and went up from there. used etching primer and painted like usual. the chrome as long as it is not peeling or chipped is part of the metal and will hole paint like metal once scuffed right. good luck. i have also had good luck in the mirror respect also. just dont have em any more.
