Has anyone ever had the gear for the oil pump come loose or snap a shaft on a stock pump? I have no idea what happened yet, but I have no desire to tear it down and find out for at least a few weeks so I can replenish the funds....

It was in a 3.0 pulling truck and appears to have lost it after the pull, truck sounded fine and the turbo did not get hurt...so I think it had pressure during the pass, my brother backed up to the sled and was idleing when it developed a slight knock...he looked down and there was no oil pressure, I waited 2 days and hooked up the lap top and fired it up...no knock but did not even develop a tenth of a psi of oil pressure

Any thoughts.....

LB7/LLY oil pump or LBZ/LMM oil pump? Was the gear/nut pinned or loc-tited?

LLY oil pump, loc-tited....

I am thinking a billet one from Curtis pinned for the next go round.... Or spending a little more and doing a belt driven wet sump setup like the SuperFarm and Prostock tractor guys do. Which will probably mean taking the rest of this season off...

Pump was also shimmed .060"-.070"

Also someone I work with mentioned a chunk of something could be wedged in the relief valve and just dumping all the oil too...never really crossed my mind.

We had it happen on our LB7 a couple years ago but was installer error. My buddy did not loctite it properly. I saw the gauge and shut it down in time though to save it.

factory gauge or a seperate mechanical gauge?

Both...

Make sure your crank aint bent and you spun a bearing that was my case when I lost oil pressure

It sounded fine when ran a couple days afterwards and did not even make a tenth of a psi with straight 50W oil cold.... It would have at least bounced the gauge or something or it would have to be knocking like a mofo, I would think...

Shimmed for what reason?

Added oil pressure and volume...

Mine ran smooth as silk for a 1000 miles then oil pressure dropped and it locked up it is something to see Jeff Dean has it right now in his shop he couldnt believe it either, so it might be something you wanna check out to save your block if it was the case

I've seen a pump suck up a piece of debris in the oil pan and cause the gears to lock up which makes the nut loosen and not spin the pump anymore. Zero oil pressure.

The gear coming loose is a common occurance. It happened to Casper back when it was internally stock and untouched. It was the first issue I had with the engine itself.
