Budget twins or triples possibly?!?

Ok, we lost a good number of our more local 3.0 NTPA sleds hooks.... Most will now be Super Stock hooks. I wanted to buy a 4.5"-5" large single turbo and run it, but they are $10k+ from Hypermax or Columbus...

For PPL our turbo will be 3.6" smoothbore, I debated on installing a single, large wastegate and a bolt on twin kit, but I'm in the dilema of needing a rather large ProStock turbo to twin with it.

So, I was wondering if anyone had any input on bolting (2) 85mm s400's on as atmospheres with the 3.6"? Do you think it would be capable of 2000hp with that turbo combination? And how much wastegate would I need? Would (1) 60mm Tial be enough? I have (2) 60mm Tials, but the simpler the better.

What are the 3.6 SB chargers making by themselves? 1500-1700fwhp?

I don't know much, so this is just me thinking out loud... With such a large exh housing on the 3.6 (I assume its large, that seems to be typical of a pulling charger), I wonder if you'd need any wastegating around it?



Are there any limits/rules on the size of the atmosphere charger(s)? It'd be nice if a couple of these now-useless 2.6 chargers could be picked up for pennies on the dollar & used as the atmosphere chargers. They can produce a shit ton of air! So surely two of them feeding your 3.6 could make some good power?!?!

Nope, just crickets. I was hoping someone who had ran a set of decent s400's for a projected HP capabilities. Maybe I'd only need billet s480's or something...

A typical S480 twin setup is working pretty hard at 1000 HP. They'll do it, but they are at the edge of their capabilities. If you're wanting to make 2000 with air to spare, you will need to go a little bigger than the 480s. Also, like Mitch said, if your exhaust housing is big enough, you may not even need to run a gate. The waste gate requirements are going to depend on secondary turbine specs and the RPM range you plan to run. What are the specs on the secondary you already have? Is it a stock displacement motor?

You all don't think a triple setup with (2) billet 485s (secondaries/low pressure) feeding a top-of-the-line 3.6" turbo (primary/high pressure) is enough air for 2000hp? Surely it is??? There's probably not a triple turbo setup currently on a duramax that's any bigger than that is there?

Last I knew Kyle Michael's was still twins? What's Kusilek's setup? How big is the HSP triple setup on Sparkle Britches' truck?

3 S475 have made it close to your goal. I would think 2 485 feeding your turbo would be enough. 483 flows around 140lbs/min of air by itself, so two flowing more than it should be good.

3.6 has a G-trim turbine 5.1" inducer, 4.4" exducer. Running a 25cm or 28cm housing most likely... Hell maybe with 3.6 a 32cm housing will be used. I'd run a 4.1" compressor and G-trim with 32cm housing if I was building triples for pulling, and two 3.6 atmospheres. But I'm not looking to run this class exclusively, or spend that much....

With a cast 480 over a cast 366 I made 948 rwhp at 64 psi, my s366 had internally gated housing and drive pressure was holding me back (95psi drive pressure). Exhaust temps were under 1700*. Power kept going up, but I had "approx 80%" LLY injectors and was at 3300 us to make that power. So I assume it was close to 1100hp flywheel.

Also I want to wastegate it to stay under 150psi drive pressure...

And The s485's I'm dealing with have made 1500hp on Hailey's dyno as a single with a 1.32 t6 housing.

I should just buy another Hart's 3.0 slotted turbo, and put (2) of those overtop of the 3.6... They are a dime a dozen also now...

You'd be right where you wan to be with a combo like that since the smoothbore 3.6 is making 1700+hp as a single. Bolting two 1200-1400hp turbo over it is definitely going to get you where you need to be with it.

I thought you were talking about 2000 to the tire. If you're wanting 2000 at the crank, a couple of 480s would be plenty, but I would be afraid the valley charger would be a little larger than optimal for that setup.

Us pullers don't talk rwhp....lol. I don't even really care about fwhp, I pull against guy's who had claimed 1650-1700hp on 3.0 slotted turbos. I know 1500hp trucks that were knocking on their back door or beating them week after week...these dyno #'s that get thrown around are pointless IMO (except for your own fine tuning and changes against your own numbers)

Van Haisley makes 2800hp on NTPA legal fuel and 3000hp on PPL legal fuel (I was told)... He split 2 deck plated Super B blocks at the cam bore, Kyle Michael's said he runs small compounds (lol) and is most likely under 2000hp and has been in the top 5 in past seasons. The higher power guys really have to drive them off the line and they just blow the tires off when they do let it rip. It's 7500lbs on dirt, lol.

If I was a betting man, I'd guess Van has around a 4.1 high pressure and a pair of 3.6-3.9 atmospheres... But that is honestly a wild guess!

Ok, thanks Mark. I was hoping someone with your experience would chime in.

I'm most likely gonna need water injection to pull this off, but maybe a billet 4.3-4.5 turbo would get the job done.

I have to get body done and cut tires mounted to see if I could even make weight for the SS class, lol

Just found a hell of a deal on a 5" Hypermax turbo, compounded over a 4.1 would be pretty decent. Would be similar price as (2) box s480's cast...decisions, decisions
