I was curious of the number of people that have broken their crankshaft were running electric fans and the number of people that were running the stock fan assembly, just curious so humor me...Thanks :)

I would put in a counter but don't know how..:D

Never owned one and it's probably not worth comparing but did'nt the old 6.5's have the same crank problems Dmax's are starting to see?

Yup that's where mine broke too. My second motor the crank was ok but I blew two holes in the block:D Now I have a built motor. Third times a charm, right?:roflmao:

One cracked LLY and one broken LBZ. Both electric fans and Fluidamprs. LLY cracked between #2 rod and #2 main. LBZ broke between #1 rod and #1 main.

They broke in similiar spots, I believe they normally broke just behind the rod bearings. SCAT is making replacement cranks for them but will not warranty them unless you use a stock blancer, so maybe they know something?

What ever happened with the ones Guy was making that were balanced with inserts? How are those lasting?

the only issue i see with this comparison is that there arent enough out there to really say that its working any better.....

think about it... there are probably what a 2,000 duramax's making 500hp now? and Guy has probably only made a handful of these internally balanced cranks with the tungsten inserts.

We also know that cranks can break on completely stock trucks but I highly doubt we ever hear about those trucks because guys with stock trucks arent on the forums. So it makes it even harder to nail down the cause of this issue ( i havent heard anyone come out with a 100% fix for it) obviously fluid dampr dont seem to make a difference or electric fans for that matter.

I would say it should help a bunch. All of the crank failures I have seen are near either the #2 or #4 mains. Putting the balance weight at the from or back of the crank will increase stress on those areas, especially if the balance is less than perfect.

From what i have read Fluiddampners are TERRIBLE for the dmax motors! Go with a ATI dampner or socal or ppe. Alot of crank failures with the fluidampner

all but a couple I have seen were bone stock.

I think it's an issue of balance tolerance. I wonder how many could be prevented by balancing the rotating assy.

It didn't help mine, I checked and my engine was balanced with the stock balancer, and then the fluid dampnr was installed, so that didn't work.. crank#1 took a crap..LOL

U know I think we should start to discuss the driving or towing conditions that cause the failures. But we'll have to be honest... LOL.... I think burnouts are a NO,NO,NO. IF u think about it you've built up alot of power and torque and then all of a sudden, everything stops where u let of the throttle and the tires finally start to grip. The balancer is infront of all of that with nothing to stop its inertia. the crank has the powertrain. I know what I mean to say I hope u guys follow me, I'm about as sharp as a marble.....LOL.....
I do know this if we all work together with respect for each other and the love of the diesel performance that we try to put, WE WILL be able to fix this issue or atleast determine the driving conditions that causes this problem.... I'll be more than happy to help in anyway, cause I'm getting tired of replacing my crank, but I'm getting good at it if I must say....

Broke mine stock dampner and fan. It broke after three very high rpm Dyno pulls and some drunk doughnuts in a field that I'm sure were very high rpm too. It didn't break all the way just a crack but it spun the #2 main when it cracked. I will try to post a pic when i get to my computer
