Anyone know how the brake light switch actually works 2006 . Its hooked on the bolt through the brake pedal, I do not see where anything pushes like a switch would to activate the lights,. It doesnt move on the stud , it just moves with it.

I have wondered this for some time. I have a 2003, and it is the same setup.

As an electrical engineer, I think it is safe to say: black magic :baby:

It has a small square acuator in the switch where it touches the rod on the square end. When it's pressed it rotates a small amount and releases the switch.

Take one off and look at it. It's pretty simple really

That makes sense. I've never taken mine off to look at it. It is in an awkward spot, and worked fine, so I didn't think it was worth the effort to remove just for curiosity.

Thanks for letting me know how it works!

There are actually two switches in it...one is normally open and closes with brake pedal applied, and the other is normally closed and opens with brake pedal applied.

Well I dug right into it and found that the Hydroboost push rod is loose on the pin and switch is tight so when you step on pedal it pushes the switch, this one actually has three switches in it, brake light, cruise and i believe the Traction control. Two closed and One open. Thanks for the help .
Some Fuel and Battery and we are about to run.

its not for traction control.
..its for the brake-transmission-shift interlock. I forgot about that when I wrote my previous post.

The duramax trucks didnt get traction control until 2009 (short beds) and 2011 (long beds)...and none of the duramax vans got it until 2011/2012.

Thanks Ben, Yes I got some what of a Wire diagram and it says the other is for TCC.
No traction? You just blew my theory of what the extra plug is for under the dash right near the cargo haul button and radio? Have to think on this one again.

Are you sure the dash harness you got was for a Duramax van?

The 15-passenger (extended wheelbase) Express gas passenger vans actually got stabilitrak/ESC/TCS way back in 2004 due to all the rollover incidents/lawsuits of schools/churches/etc carrying students around and getting into rollover accidents.

The shorter wheelbase gas 12-passenger vans got stabilitrak in 2006 I think?

Gas cargo vans (both short and long wheelbase) didnt get stabilitrak until maybe 2009ish.

And duramax vans, 2011-2012.

Obviously each different powertrain and wheelbase configuration/combo takes GM thousands of man hours (not to mention money!) to design/calibrate/test/validate the stability control and traction control system.

So with any new automotive technologies (whether its ESC/TCS or a new radio), the bean counters have to prioritize which vehicles need the technology first, which are the most common/highest selling volume vehicles, and devote R&D time/cost accordingly. And then the lower-priority vehicles get the technology trickled down to them at later times when R&D costs become lower due to more widespread use of the particular technology.

Which is why GM started introducing ESC/TCS on SUV's back in 2002/2003, and made it standard on all SUV's by 2005-2006 due to high sales volume, generally less-skilled drivers who arent used to handling a top-heavy vehicle, and most used for carting large numbers of kids around (IE, potential for lawsuits)......but it wasnt introduced on half ton trucks until 2007.5, and even that was ONLY on crew cab short bed half tons (highest sales volume/most likely to be carrying 5-passengers)...extended cab and regular cab half tons werent until 2009....And HD trucks not until 2009 as well, and on those 2009-2010 HD trucks it was on short bed trucks only (again, short beds being the higher sales volume). Long bed single rear wheel trucks was 2011, and duallys were 2015.

Long story short, if that harness you have is definitely from a diesel van prior to 2011-2012, its not going to have any ESC/TCS wiring. Unless GM only has one dash harness for all vans? But I doubt that..

Can you post a picture of the connector?

My guess is its for the passenger airbag disable switch....or something HVAC related...or a rear cargo light.

Yes I took it out of the 2006 GM Savanna Duramax. Heres a picture I have , not real good , but it is right next to the cargo haul button. See how much I pay attention, I thought it was a Express all this time.
