my buddies 04 cc lly. he called me yest and was complaining he was smoking out the town of toorington. people were beeping at him it was so bad. he got this truck from his boss for being a good employee. it had 66,000 miles and a van aaken stupib box which i promptly removed. in the first month he need a trans because his boss nicely dented the trans pan and must have been restricted flow. now this.

okay no codes except egr soft codes. i was not at work so i had to use efi scan tool, i first noticed that the maf flow was low. turns out he had a k&n. so we cleaned the maf and swapped the filter. no good still low. then we swapped mine because it was known good. nothing. checked egr position and it was moving normally not stuck open.

i was out of answers so i setup a log and sent him down the road. he was barely moving and sounded like an old ford but i think i found my issue. 100% throttle and 0.1 boost psi. other than that nothing for boost. the turbo spins fine by hand although it has about a total of 1/8 inch of side to side play. the odd thing is there was no codes. what are your thoughts.

Does it do a vane test at start-up? Even if it does that sounds like a lot of play. Check out ebay there have been a bunch of take off turbos in the past few months for both lly's and lbz's.

Does the compressor wheel move in and out more than .005"?

Does the compressor wheel actually gouging metal out of it's housing at the inducer?

Datalog vane position.

Charger failures do happen on LLY's but they are less common than other problems with similiar symptoms.

okay pat no front to rear movement, no gouging. i had him log boost pressure, but not vains. i thought of that way to many beers later. the truck is here at the dealer now so we can spend more time doing it. i want to run some vain tests on it once i get it in. we'll see. i just cant get over the no code. and the lack of air movement. i'll let everyone know.

It could be turbo failure but i would beilve that to be less of my worryies. For the turbo not to grenade or make loud racket while driveing I dont beilve that would be it. Dont get me wrong theres a possiblety. There is a white wire on the passanger side of the turbo make sure that thing is plugged in correctly and did not break off or lose connection. That will leave vanes wide open and throw killer smoke it will also allow it not to make any boost. I have mine wired to a switch so when people follow to close they get the switch.

yeah i got to check the vanes with a tech2. no noise no nothing. it runs so rich it is disgusting. just by reving it in park i was seeing a 2XXX pulse width. also get this, so pissed now, i told my dispatcher at work to make sure the truck doesn't get started, i had rags stuffed in the turbo inlet to keep dust out until it came in as it got towed to the shop. the pos let the lot lizard go out and move the f***king thing. ha ha ha. he is gunna get an azz whopping. have not gone out to see it yet but i bet my rags are gone.

100% throttle and 0.1 boost psi.
...what are your thoughts.

sheared shaft? At high rpm, you would have a boost indication, regardless of vane position. 0 boost at hi rpm is impossible with the VGT.

I'll bet your rags didn't move an inch. I haven't seen one sheared that didn't have movement, but maybe...

or your CAC split open? Silicone boot fell off?

no boots off, checked em all. the rags did not move a bit. i checked at lunch. so that means it isn't spinning at all because i had them stuffed right into the impeller blades. if the shaft was split wouldn't it be removeable if i pulled on it? i know if it is not broken you have to remove it from the back because the trubine is attatched to the shaft. not sure though if anything else would hold it up.

Easy enough to tell, have someone start the truck while you watch the compressor.

If it is not sheared, it will spin.

edit: it will spin anyway from the air that is being pulled through. Disconnect the compressor discharge pipe, and do the above test

okay guys update from today, i started the truck and the turbo spins fine, meaning it is definatley not from the incoming air. the vain position and actual match perfect and commanding them either on/off they are moving. you can hear the differance. now the egr is commanding but barely moving so we are gunna try it first. the thought being it is open and not allowing boost to build. i am not sure on this but the tech that is "actually" responsible thinks so and said he has had them like this before.

yeah i understand but it is not working properly anyhow so we are warrantying it. once it is functioning right then we'll see. i personally don't think it will fix it, but it is not my writing on the back of the repair order:D. dont want my buddy getting in trouble. well...........................
