I have a 2002 LB7, 300,000 miles on it. The original block heater went out in December of 2016, so I replaced it. I think the replacement was purchased online, along with a new cord. The replacement block heater lasted about 3 months (Feb-Mar 2017), and I replaced it again in January of this year, this time buying a heater and new cord from the dealership. Well, now the 2nd replacement has quit working.

I like to leave it plugged in if the temps get much below 15 degrees F at night. We get a stretch in the winter with the low temperatures dropping well below zero, and my experience is that it starts hard when temps get below 10 degrees.

I use a standard extension cord, I would guess on the order of 14 gauge wire. On the original block heater I used the same extension cord and it lasted 10+ years; have I just gotten bad luck with parts, should I use a heavier extension cord? I'm up at 4:30 every morning to get ready for work; I really don't want to get up at 3:00 to plug the truck in and keep a stupid block heater from failing.

If it is below 15°F outside, leaving the block heater on all night shouldn't get hot enough to hurt it. But it does cost a lot, so you might consider getting a timer anyway. That's what I use, so it kicks on about 2 hours before I plan to leave.

I think you might just have bad luck with the block heaters. If you got the heater in January, maybe the dealer will warranty it? Are the heaters themselves failing, or the cords?
