I drove my 05 daully back to Bowling Green, KY to attend the eastern regional finals of NHRDA on the 24th of October. On the way back I stopped in Missouri to visit a friend who was working as an inspector on a large crude oil pipeling they were building. He was about finished with the job and asked me to haul back acouple of easy chairs he had in his rented apartment due him having limited room in his truck. I tied the chairs in the bed with one of those synch down straps and headed west. I had also told another friend I would stop in Montana and haul back his 38' toy hauler to Oregon so he didn't have to make an extra trip to get it.
I got the trailer and put the chairs in the trailer to make room for the hitch. I left the strap in the bed and didn't thing too much about it. One end tied to the eye bolt in the front of the bed. As I was coming off a big pass just out side of Helena, the combination of my speed, (about 60mph) and the heavy cross wind I was fighting got the strap flopping around in the bed. Before I was able to pull over and secure it, it got down between the bed and cab and wrapped around the drive shaft. In a second it wrapped up and snapped the strap and in the process cut my fuel line in two. Bizarre as hell but it happened.
Note to self and warning to everyone, don't leave an unsecured strap in the bed your truck especially if you are towing. The bow wake of wind coming off the front of the trailer caused it to flip up in the wind and down between the cab and bed. Not good, and a pain in the butt to fix. Did it with a short piece of pipe that we could fit into the line and secure with clamps.:thumb:
