I recently converted from a 98 Dodge Cummins to a 2006 GMC Duramax so I am in the process of learning about and upgrading the new truck. My LBZ is stock other than an older Edge Evolution programmer and 4" turbo back exhaust. I use the truck mainly for towing an enclosed car trailer and soon a 33' 5th wheel travel trailer. The truck holds back real good on most hills using the tow/haul mode on the Allison but with the travel trailer it will be exposed to some 8%-9% grades and I am thinking I should look into an engine brake also. If I understand correctly the LBZ has a VVT turbo and can use it as the engine brake. If that is correct what would you guys recommend for an engine brake? Thanks in advance for any and all help.

Just have a reputable tuner write you a DSP5 tune with the exhaust brake function built into a couple settings. easy as that

Google: LBZ: HOW TO: Activate factory turbo brake and read the thread on it, I have tuned a couple lbz's and haven't been able to make the brake come on as strong as the factory programmed brake engages. I'll let you read up on it rather than explaining it all here but I think this is a better option than getting a turbo brake tuned into certain tunes because this switch can be used in any tune if you ever go to efi live but it can also be used with the edge you already have. All you need is a 2 pole switch, some wire and ecm terminals. I have plenty of ecm terminals shoot me a pm if you need any.

I have both a EFI tune and the switch like mad posted about. I like the tune better it seems to work better on my truck, but I've never tested it out in the mountains towing.

Thanks for the replys, I will look into each option. If I change to the EFI live who would be the best for me to go thru for it?

There is no best IMO. I would pick any of the well known tuners that might be close to you if your lucky enough to have one. I just like the idea of being able to go somewhere to have my tuning done over it all be via emails.
