Under The Hood
Just bought a.house a couple weeks ago
Working on remodeling it now. Sometime back somebody put a toilet and sink in a 41x41 closet and that is the downstairs bathroom. The upstairs one is very large and nice. But this downstairs one you can't hardly use. The toilet is 2" from the wall. 2" from the sink and 10" from the wall in front of it. Its not mounted though so you can slide it out of the way a bit. Plus it's one of those older midget height ones which are good for leverage but are a long fall when sitting down and aren't as comfortable for those long brainstorming sessions.

The little closet is in the corner of the kitchen. This is the north west exterior corner of the house. The north wall has a largish window about 8" east of this closet. The west wall has the rear door into the house right next to it. The distance from the current 41x41 bathroom to the next interior wall running north south is around 6 feet maybe. However directly opposite on that wall is the door to the little mudroom that has a door out the side of the house and also goes to the basement. The dining room is on the other side of the interior wall along this little room running east west.

My dilemma is this. How do I build a useable bathroom with a toilet and shower stall in it that will pass inspection and not block off basement access or natural light from that window. That window is on a north wall though so its not like there's that much light coming through it but it does help make the room seem bigger.

My idea is to put the shower in the current 41x41 area and continue the bathrooms interior east west wall until it meets the next north south wall. Then block off the door to the mudroom and put the toilet there facing west towards the shower. Then put the door to the room centered so that you get as much of the window as you can without seeing the toilet. The door to the mudroom would be moved to the dining room.

I think my best option is a pocket door for the bathroom. But you will still see the toilet. I was wondering if anybody knew if there was a way to make a door that would close off the wall like a normal room and then have it open into the bathroom towards the toilet and have it latch in another jamb there which would be 90* away. This would give you the privacy of a full bathroom when in there but allow you to open the door while simultaneously closing off the toilet for a more appealing kitchen

Just some ideas.

Thanks.
